Sergeant Major Johnson reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island in July of 1989 and was assigned to 3rd Battalion, India Co, Platoon 3081.  He completed basic training and graduated as Private First Class in October 1989.

Sergeant Major Johnson’s military education includes graduation from the School of Infantry as a Rifleman and Anti-Tank Guided Missile Assault-man in 1989, Light Armored Vehicle Crewman in 1990, and Scout Platoon Leader Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1998.
 
Sergeant Major Johnson deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm with 2nd Light Armored Infantry Battalion. After Desert Storm, Sergeant Major Johnson served with Delta Company 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion until 2006.  During his tenure with Delta Company, Sergeant Major Johnson served as Scout Team Leader, TOW Section Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Platoon Commander, and Company Operations Chief. Sergeant Major Johnson deployed with Delta Company in support of multiple operations, Operation Sea Breeze, Ukraine in 2001, Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, Operation Battle Griffin, Norway in 2005, and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005.

Sergeant Major Johnson transferred to Marine Forces Command, Norfolk, Virginia in 2006 where he served as Operations Watch Chief from 2006 to 2008.

In 2008, Sergeant Major Johnson transferred to the Marine Corps Intelligence Activity (MCIA) where he initially served as an Intelligence Analyst in the Weapons and Technology Branch. In 2010, Sergeant Major Johnson was again mobilized in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and served as the MCIA Joint Reserve Intelligence Center Operations Chief and Command Training Chief.

In June 2012 Sergeant Major Johnson was assigned to Charlie Company, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion as Company First Sergeant.

In May 2016 Sergeant Major Johnson was promoted to his current rank and was assigned to VMM-774, Marine Aviation Group 49 as Squadron Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Johnson’s personal decorations include:  Navy /Marine Corps Commendation Medal, two Navy/ Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and two Combat Action Ribbons.
