Captain Luis A. Nuñez, Jr.
Executive Officer, 4th Medical Battalion

CAPT Luis A. Nuñez, Jr., attended the Norfolk State University where he was awarded his Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology, and in 2006 he received his Master of Arts Degree in Educational Leadership from San Diego State University. He graduated in 2018 from the distance education program at the Naval War College and completed Phase I of Joint Professional Military Education.

CAPT Nuñez entered the U.S. Navy in 1985 and his first tour of duty was as a Hospital Corpsman at Naval Hospital Philadelphia. He followed that tour with attendance at the Basic Laboratory Technician program at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. His next several tours were on the USS Ponce (LPD-15), Branch Medical Clinic Sewell’s Point, Norfolk, Virginia, and Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. He was discharged in 1989 as a Hospital Corpsman Third Class.

In 1997, CAPT Nuñez was commissioned as an Ensign in the Medical Service Corps and his first tour of duty was at Naval Medical Center San Diego where he was appointed as Assistant Division Officer of the Core Laboratory and subsequently as Officer in Charge of the Blood Donor Center. In 2001, he transferred to Naval Hospital Sigonella, Italy, as Department Head of Laboratory Services.

CAPT Nuñez was selected to attend Full Time Out-Service training at San Diego State University, San Diego, California. In 2006, CAPT Nuñez was appointed as Program Director and Department Head of the Advanced Medical Laboratory Technician Program, Naval School of Health Sciences, San Diego.

CAPT Nuñez entered the U.S. Naval Reserve in December 2008. In March 2009, he was appointed as Assistant Officer in Charge, Operational Health Support Unit San Diego, Detachment A, and in January 2011, he was selected as Officer in Charge.

In June 2011, CAPT Nuñez received mobilization orders in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and was assigned to the NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan, as Combat Advisor / Lab Mentor to the Director for Laboratory Services at the National Military Hospital, Kabul, Afghanistan.

In December of 2014, CAPT Nuñez was appointed as the Assistant Director for Administration, Operational Health Support Unit San Diego, Headquarters and eventually the Interim Director for Administration, Operational Health Support Unit San Diego, Headquarters. .

In December of 2017, CAPT Nuñez was appointed as the Director for Administration, Expeditionary Medical Facility Camp Pendleton, Headquarters. In December of 2019, CAPT Nuñez was appointed as the Executive Officer, 4th Medical Battalion, 4th Medical Logistics Group, San Diego.

His personal awards include the, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Army Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal and various service medals and unit awards.
