Biography

 

Lieutenant Colonel Bryan E. Patterson
Battalion Commander
4th Reconnaissance Battalion

LtCol Patterson is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana and graduated from the US Naval Academy with a B.S. in Oceanography in 1993. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps and then reported to The Basic School and the Infantry Officers Course in Quantico, Virginia. 

LtCol Patterson's first tour was with 1st Battalion, 5th Marines where he served as a Rifle and Weapons Platoon Commander and Company Executive Officer for Company C.  During this tour, LtCol Patterson deployed with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit to Okinawa, participated in Task Force Wildfire in Washington and Montana, and led a Joint Task Force 6 mission in counter drug operations.

LtCol Patterson was then assigned to Recruiting Station San Diego where he served as the Operations Officer and Executive Officer followed by Amphibious Warfare School in Quantico. He next attended Marine Air Ground Task Force Intelligence Officers Course in Dam Neck, Virginia.  After those assignments, LtCol Patterson became the Intelligence Officer for 3d Battalion, 5th Marines. 

On September 11, 2001, LtCol Patterson was assigned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division where he served as the Company Commander for Headquarters Company and then Company A. In 2003, LtCol Patterson led Company A during the initial invasion of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In 2004, LtCol Patterson left active duty and pursued a civilian career as a Professional Engineer. After earning an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Washington, he worked in Seattle for Anchor Environmental, LLC as a project manager on aquatic based remediation projects. In 2009, LtCol Patterson joined the US Department of State as a Construction Executive managing construction projects at US missions overseas including Afghanistan, Yemen, Pakistan, Kenya, Cameroon, Iraq, Philippines, Singapore, Israel, Jordan, Singapore, The Marshall Islands, Mexico, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. 

In 2011, LtCol Patterson re-joined the Marines as a reservist and became a Future Plans Officer with the Joint Enabling Capabilities Command in Norfolk, Virginia and developed contingency and crisis action plans as part of the Global Response Force. In 2014, LtCol Patterson attended Command and Staff College and earned a Masters in Military Science.  In 2015, as an employee of the Department of State, LtCol Patterson attended the Eisenhower School at National Defense University and earned an M.S. in National Resource Strategy. In 2016, LtCol Patterson took command of Company B, Intelligence Support Battalion and deployed Marines in support of intelligence and combat operations worldwide. In 2018, LtCol Patterson joined Marine Corps Intelligence Activity as the CI/HUMINT Branch Chief. In 2019, LtCol Patterson accepted ADOS orders to serve as the Military Deputy at the Naval Research Laboratory.

In April 2022 LtCol Patterson assumed the duties as Battalion Commander, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion.

His military decorations include: the Bronze Star Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, and various unit awards.
