First Sergeant Emanuel G. Spottswood

First Sergeant Spottswood enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during the summer of 2001, and reported to recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC during the summer of 2002. Private First Class Spottswood attended Marine Combat Training, at Camp Geiger, NC, and MOS training at Marine Corps Communications and Electronics School (MCCES) at Marine Corps Base, Twentynine Palms. Private Spottswood remained at MCCES until June of 2003 when he completed training as a Field Wireman and with the MOS of Unit Level Circuit Switch Operator.

From June 2003 to March 2005 Private Spottswood was assigned to Bravo Company, Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28, Marine Air Control Group 28, where he was promoted to the rank of Private First Class, and Lance Corporal (Meritorious). Lance Corporal Spottswood deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in March of 2004. Upon return in September of 2004, Lance Corporal Spottswood was meritoriously promoted to Corporal and selected to attend Corporals Course.

Corporal Spottswood was recommended to Marine Corps Embassy Security Group (formerly Marine Security Guard Battalion where he attended training from March until May of 2005. In May 2005, Corporal Spottswood reported as a watch stander to the United States Embassy, Islamabad, Pakistan. While assigned to the Embassy in Islamabad, Corporal Spottswood was promoted to Sergeant. Upon completion of his tour in Islamabad, Sergeant Spottswood was reassigned to the United States Embassy in Manila, Philippines. While in Manila, Sergeant Spottswood also served as the Color Sergeant performing multiple joint Color Guards with Philippines Army and Marine Corps, representing the US Embassy at joint commemoration ceremonies and other events. In June of 2007, Sergeant Spottswood reported to the United States Embassy in The Hague, Netherlands where he served as Acting Detachment Commander, and Assistant Detachment Commander.

In June of 2008, Sergeant Spottswood returned Quantico until his End of Active Service on July 7, 2008. In January 2009, Sergeant Spottswood reenlisted into the Marine Corps Reserves and conducted an MOS lateral to become a Topographic/Geospatial Analyst. In March of 2010, Sergeant Spottswood attended the Marine Corps Basic Topographic Analyst Course. Immediately upon graduation in November of the same year, Sergeant Spottswood accepted orders supporting counterterrorism operations until December of 2014. In April 2012, Sergeant Spottswood was promoted to Staff Sergeant. From January 2014 to September 2015, Staff Sergeant Spottswood served with the Marine Corps Installations Command (MCICOM)'s Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA) detachment supporting Continuity of Operations Planning (COOP), Marine Corps emergency management, Defense Support to Civil Authorities, and special events planning and execution. Staff Sergeant Spottswood accepted orders from October 2015 through December 2016 supporting vulnerability assessments for critical government facilities. During this time, he also supported Personnel Recovery training and planning for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

From January 2017 to March 2018, Staff Sergeant Spottswood served as the Staff Noncommissioned Officer-in-Charge (SNCOIC) for Detachment 2, Intelligence Support Battalion in Quantico, Virginia. During this time, Staff Sergeant Spottswood was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. On June 1, 2020, Gunnery Sergeant Spottswood was promoted (frocked) to First Sergeant. He reported to Headquarters and Service (H&S) Company, Combat Logistics Battalion (CLB) 451, Combat Logistics Regiment (CLR) 45 in Charlotte, North Carolina in July of 2020 where he served as the Company First Sergeant. In June 2023, First Sergeant Spottswood was reassigned to Bravo Company, 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance (LAR) Battalion in Frederick, Maryland.

First Sergeant Spottswood’s personal awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Humanitarian Service Medal.
