Colonel Joseph J. Russo
Colonel Russo was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in July 1992.
Upon completion of the Basic School and Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, Lieutenant Russo was assigned to 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he served as a battery officer with 1st Battalion, 10th Marines, and 5th Battalion, 10th Marines. While with 10th Marines, he deployed to Okinawa, Japan. He was promoted to the grade of Captain in July 1996 and subsequently attended the Logistics Officer Basic Course, attaining a secondary MOS in that field. He was then assigned as the Logistics Officer, Marine Aircraft Group 11, MCAS Miramar in San Diego in April 1997. While at MAG-11, Captain Russo deployed with 13th MEU(SOC) to Eastern Africa and South West Asia in support of Operation Southern Watch. In December 1999, he attended the US Army Basic Airborne School at Ft Benning, Georgia.
Captain Russo attended the Field Artillery Advance Course at Ft Sill, Oklahoma in March 2000. Assigned to 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California in August 2000, he assumed command of Battery B, 1/11. In August 2001, Battery B deployed in support of 15th MEU(SOC) to the Western Pacific, Persian Gulf, and North Arabian Sea and participated in Operation Enduring Freedom I. Promoted to the grade of Major in May 2002, he was assigned as the Operations Officer, 1st Battalion, 11th Marines. In January 2003, he deployed with 1/11 as part of Amphibious Task Force West, participating in combat operations with RCT-1 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom I. He then attended the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Ft Leavenworth, Kansas, subsequently serving as the USMC Fire Support Exchange Officer with the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division (Light), Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. While with 25th ID, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom V.
In July 2006, Major Russo reported to the Recruit Training Regiment, MCRD San Diego, with assignments as the Battalion Executive Officer, 3d Recruit Training Battalion, Regimental Operations Officer, and Regimental Executive Officer, Recruit Training Regiment. From April 2009 through June 2011, LtCol Russo served as the Commanding Officer, 5th Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California. From June 2011 through June 2012, he attended Top Level School as a CMC National Security Affairs Fellow at Stanford University, attaining an M.A. in History. He subsequently served as the Current Operations Officer, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe & Africa in Stuttgart, Germany until June 2014. From June of 2014 to May of 2015 Colonel Russo was assigned as the Ground Colonels Monitor, Manpower Management Division, HQMC in Quantico, Virginia. He assumed command of 14th Marine Regiment in May of 2015.
