First Sergeant Chatfield is a native of Anchorage, Alaska. He graduated from Kealakehe High School, Kailua-Kona Hawaii in 2004 and entered the Marine Corps on 12 July 2004. He underwent recruit training at MCRD San Diego, California, and graduated 8 October 2004. First Sergeant Chatfield reported to the School of Infantry West for MOS training in October 2004 and was promoted to Private First Class and graduated in January 2005. In January 2005, First Sergeant Chatfield reported to Basic Security Guard School in Chesapeake, Virginia and graduation in April 2005. First Sergeant Chatfield executed orders to 3D FAST Company, Security Force Battalion and was assigned as a team leader in 3rd Platoon. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 1 September 2005. First Sergeant Chatfield deployed to Rota, Spain in September 2006, was promoted to Corporal in December 2006, and returned in March 2007.

In July 2007, he reported to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, 7th Marine Regiment and was assigned as a squad leader in India Company 2nd platoon. He attended Infantry Squad Leaders Course in October 2007 and graduated in December 2007. He was then meritoriously promoted to Sergeant in February 2008. First Sergeant Chatfield deployed to Iraq from February 2008 to September 2008, then deployed to Afghanistan from September 2009 to May 2010. In January 2011, First Sergeant Chatfield reported to Basic Recruiters Course. Upon graduating, he reported to Recruiting Station Denver, Recruiting Sub Station Colorado Springs, Colorado as a Canvassing Recruiter. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant on 1 July 2011. In May 2012, he was assigned as the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer In-Charge of Recruiting Sub Station Springs South and was meritoriously promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in January 2013. First Sergeant Chatfield attended and graduated Advanced Course in October 2013.

In May 2014, he reported to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 5th Marine Regiment and was assigned as the Golf Company Gunnery Sergeant. He attended Infantry Unit Leaders Course in July 2014 and graduated in September 2014. He deployed with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit to Okinawa in October 2014 and returned in April 2015. He was then promoted to First Sergeant on 18 December 2015 and reported to Marine Combat Training Battalion, SOI-West and was assigned as the Golf Company First Sergeant. During his time at SOI-West he also served as the Hotel Company and Bravo Company First Sergeant.

In January of 2018, First Sergeant Chatfield was assigned to Intelligence Company, 1st Marine Raider Support Battalion, Marine Raider Support Group. In January 2019, he was assigned to Marine Special Operations Company Alpha and deployed to the Philippines, then returned to serve as the Intelligence Company First Sergeant. In February 2020, he was assigned to Marine Special Operations Company Delta, deployed to Iraq in July 2020 and returned January 2021.

In June 2021, First Sergeant Chatfield reported to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion 24th Marines to serve as the Inspector Instructor First Sergeant.

First Sergeant Chatfield's personal decorations include the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal, third award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, third award with “V”, and Combat Action Ribbon.
