Sergeant Major Esparza is a native of El Paso, Texas. He attended Recruit Training in January of 1995. After graduating from the School of Infantry, he was assigned to Co E, 2d Battalion 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division where he served as a Rifleman, Fire Team Leader, and Squad Leader. He was promoted to Sergeant January 1999.

Upon completion of this tour, he was assigned to Co D, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion. While assigned to Co D, he served as a Recon Man, Assistant Team Leader and Team Leader. He was then transferred to Btry D, 2d Battalion 14th Marines in December 2000. He then attended Ammunition Technician Course in Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.

Following graduation in October 2001, he served as a Battery Ammunition Technician and later, Battery Ammunition Chief. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant and graduated from the Resident Career Course July 2003. January 2005, Btry D was mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a provisional Military Police Company. While assigned to Co B, 2d Military Police Battalion, 2d Marine Logistics Group, Al Taqaddum, Iraq, he served as a Platoon Sergeant and Platoon Commander.

After his tour in Iraq, he returned to Btry D and served as Local Security Chief. He graduated from the Resident Advanced Course July 2006. He was then transferred to H&S Co, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion and mobilized, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom October 2006. He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant November 2006. While assigned to H&S Co in Al Asad, Iraq, he served as the Company Gunnery Sergeant and Senior Watch Officer.

Following this tour in Iraq, he was transferred to Co D, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion where he served as Company Gunnery Sergeant. He was then promoted to First Sergeant in June 2010 and was assigned as the Company First Sergeant of Co C, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion. After completing this tour in May 2013, he was transferred to Truck Co, 23D Marine Regiment where he was assigned as the Company First Sergeant. He was then promoted to Sergeant Major in April 2015 and was assigned as the Battalion Sergeant Major of 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion.

Sergeant Major Esparza is a graduate of Command & Staff College and Expeditionary Warfare School Distance Education Programs. He graduated from Park University and has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration. He also graduated from Webster University and has a Master of Arts in Management and Leadership.
