Sergeant Major Coyer enlisted in the Marine Corps in August of 1997 and completed recruit training at MCRD San Diego on October 31, 1997. Following recruit training; He attended Marine Combat Training and Motor Transportation school in Fort Leonard Wood Mo. Upon Completion of the Tactical Vehicle Operators Course, he was assigned the MOS 3531, Tactical Vehicle Operator.
 

Following Motor Transportation School, Sergeant Major Coyer reported to Ground Defense Security Force, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in December of 1997 for duty as a Tactical Vehicle Operator.  During his tour, he was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.  His billets included Line Non Commissioned Officer (Line NCO) and squad leader. 

     

Sergeant Major Coyer was then transferred to Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Truck Company in January of 1999 and was assigned as a Tactical Vehicle Operator and Line NCO.  In August of that same year, he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal.  While assigned with Truck Company, Sergeant Major Coyer completed deployments to Greece and Bosnia.  In August of 2000, Sergeant Major Coyer was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

 

In May of 2002 Sergeant Major Coyer requested and received orders to Drill Instructor school at MCRD San Diego, CA. Upon graduation, Sergeant Major Coyer was assigned to 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, Kilo Company for duty as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor.  In March of 2005 Sergeant Major Coyer was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

 

After successfully completing Drill Instructor duty, Sergeant Major Coyer was transferred to Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Truck Company for duty as a Platoon Sergeant.  While assigned to Truck Company, Sergeant Major Coyer deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines in August of 2005 and with 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines in August of 2006.

 

Sergeant Major Coyer was then transferred to Officer Training Command, Newport, RI in January of 2009 for duty as Class Drill Instructor.  While assigned to Officer Training Command Sergeant Major Coyer held the billets of Regimental Physical Training Coordinator and Battalion Staff Non Commissioned Officer in Charge.  In October of 2009 Sergeant Major Coyer was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.

 

In January of 2011, Sergeant Major Coyer was transferred to Marine Wing Support Squadron 372 and assigned as the Air Field Operation Company First Sergeant.  In July of 2011 Sergeant Major Coyer was sent TAD and assigned to I MEF Forward, C-10 and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  In October 2012, Sergeant Major Coyer was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant.  While assigned to I MEF Forward, Sergeant Major Coyer served as the C-10 ANSF SALT-P coordinator and the ALP pay agent.

 

After returning from Afghanistan, Sergeant Major Coyer received orders to 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistic Group, Camp Pendleton, CA and was assigned to Bridge Company.  In June of 2013 he was reassigned to Bulk Fuel Company.

 

In June of 2014 Sergeant Major Coyer received orders to MCRD San Diego and was assigned as the Company H First Sergeant. In September of 2015 he was reassigned as the First Sergeant of Drill Instructor School.

 

Sergeant Major Coyer was frocked to his current rank in March of 2017 and assumed his current position as the Inspector-Instructor Sergeant Major, 2d Battalion, 25th Marines in April of that same year.

 

Sergeant Major Coyer’s personal awards include: Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon
