First Sergeant Rafael Iturrino enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 21, 1998 and graduated recruit training at Parris Island on April, 1998. During this period he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Private First Class. He attended SOI, Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Upon completion of School of Infantry, he was assigned to Lima Co 3rd BN, 8th MAR Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, as a machine gunner. During this period, he was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.

In June of 1999, Lance Corporal Iturrino deployed with the 26 MEU with 3rd BN 8th Marines Lima Company. During the deployment, Lance Corporal Iturrino participated in Operation Avid Response, Western Turkey earthquake. Operations Joint Guardian, Operation Noble Anvil, Operation Joint Guardian Kosovo.

In October of 2000, Lance Corporal Iturrino deployed to Okinawa Japan as a squad leader for machinegun section. During the period, Lance Corporal Iturrino deployed to Korea and Hokkaido Japan for training exercises.  Upon completion of the deployment, LCpl Iturrino participated in Operation Eastern Access Puerto Rico. During this period he was promoted to the rank of Corporal.

In July of 2001, Corporal Iturrino was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. In September of 2001, Sergeant Iturrino was assigned to attend Recruiting School at San Diego, California. Upon completion of Recruiting School, Sergeant Iturrino was assigned to 1st District Recruiting Station in Brooklyn New York where he served as an area canvassing recruiter.

In February of 2005, Sgt Iturrino was assigned to 3rd BN 2nd MAR in WPNS CO, where he served as a vehicle commander CAAT PLT. In February 2005 Sergeant Iturrino deployed to Kuwait and Iraq to participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom.  During this period, Sgt Iturrino participated in Operation Matador, Operation Quick Strike, and Operation Spear.

In Jan 2006 Sergeant Iturrino was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. During this period Staff Sergeant Iturrino served as a Platoon Sergeant for Scout Snipers and Platoon Sergeant for India Co 1st Platoon. In July 2006 Staff Sergeant deployed to Kuwait and Iraq to participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In September of 2007 Staff Sergeant Iturrino was assigned to attend Drill Instructor School at Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon completion of the Drill Instructor School, Staff Sergeant was assigned to Echo Co 2nd RTBN, where he served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor. Staff Sergeant was than assigned to Fox Co 2nd RTBN where he served as a Series Gunnery Sergeant. During this period he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant on Nov of 2009.

In March of 2010 Gunnery Sergeant Iturrino was selected to Drill Instructor School as a Squad Instructor where he served as a basic warrior training instructor.

In April of 2011 Gunnery Sergeant was assigned to 2nd BN 4th MAR, where he served as a senior enlisted advisor for the embedded training teams. In August 2011 Gunnery Sergeant Iturrino deployed to Afghanistan to participate in Operations Enduring Freedom. During this period GySgt Iturrino participated in Operations Alekhines Gun.

In April 2012 Gunnery Sergeant Iturrino was than assigned to Fox Company where he served as a Company Gunnery Sergeant.

In April 2013 Gunnery Sergeant Iturrino was promoted to First Sergeant and was than assigned to 2nd Bn, 11th Mar, Battery K and Battery G First Sergeant. During this period he deployed to Okinawa, Japan.

In April of 2015 First Sergeant Iturrino was assigned to 4th Amphibious Assault Battalion as Company D First Sergeant and currently holds that billet.

His personal awards are; Navy Commendation Medal (gold star with combat v device. Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (gold star with combat v device), Combat Actions (2 gold star) as well as various other unit and service awards.
