Lieutenant Colonel David M. Ortiz is a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico.  He joined the Marine Corps in September of 1999.  Upon completion of Officers Candidates School, The Basic School, and the Infantry Officers Course, he joined 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines in November of 2000.  LtCol Ortiz served as a rifle platoon commander, rifle company executive officer, rifle company commander, assistant operations officer and battalion liaison officer.  

In November 2003, Lieutenant Colonel Ortiz received orders to Officers Candidates School and served as a platoon commander, company executive officer, and officer-in-charge of the Tactics Section.  While at Officer Candidates School he volunteered to serve as an individual augment to the Office of Administrative Review for Detainees and Enemy Combatants.   

In August of 2006, Lieutenant Colonel Ortiz reported to Expeditionary Warfare School and graduated in May of 2007.

Upon graduation from Expeditionary Warfare School, he reported to 1st Battalion, 5th Marines where he assumed the duties as the Alpha Company Commander from May 2007 to November 2008.  In November 2008, Lieutenant Colonel Ortiz was assigned to be the Team Chief of Military Transition Team 0731. 

In November 2009, Lieutenant Colonel Ortiz received orders to I MEF, G-7 serving as the officer-in-charge of the Special Operations Training Group Raids Branch and the Operations and Training Officer at the Advisor Training Cell. 

Lieutenant Colonel Ortiz left Active duty in May of 2012 and joined the Marine Corps Reserves.  From June 2012 to January 2014, he served as the Executive Officer for 2d Battalion, 23d Marines. 

Most recently, Lieutenant Colonel Ortiz served and a team leader and officer in-charge of a detachment providing mobile battle staff training to ground units across the Marine Forces Reserve in support of Marine Corps Tactics and Operations Group in 29 Palms, California.   

Lieutenant Colonel Ortiz holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Adams State College, a Master of Arts degree from Johns Hopkins University, is a graduate of Expeditionary Warfare School, Marine Corps Command and Staff, and is certified as an Operations and Tactics Instructor. 

In his civilian capacity, Lieutenant Colonel Ortiz is the founder of a management consulting firm located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
