Sergeant Major, 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment Sergeant Major David J. Auwen

Sergeant Major David Auwen enlisted in the Marine Corps completing recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, SC in December 1997 and then completed the MAGTF Intelligence Specialist – Entry course at the Navy Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center (NMITC) Dam Neck, VA in May 1998. 


Private First Class Auwen was then assigned as an Intelligence Clerk with H&S Co, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines in Detroit, MI.  Lance Corporal Auwen took orders with the Recruiting Station Troy, Recruiting Sub-Station Mt. Clemens as a Recruiters Aide from April –December 1999.  Following those orders Corporal Auwen took orders to the Special Purpose MAGTF (Experimental), Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory in Quantico, VA from January –May 2000. 


In May 2000 Corporal Auwen was accepted into the Active Reserve Program and served as the Intelligence Chief for Marine Wing Support Group-47 at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, MI.  While there he also served as the Group Color Sergeant. 


In November 2001 Sergeant Auwen augmented to active duty and was assigned to the 1st Marine Division G-2 at Camp Pendleton, CA.  He deployed in November 2002 to Kuwait in support of Operation Internal Look which then transitioned to Operation Iraqi Freedom where he served on the 1st Marine Division G-2 Forward Command element and with Task Force Tripoli as the Analysis Chief. 


In June 2003 Staff Sergeant Auwen was assigned as the Intelligence Chief for the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines and in November 2003 deployed to Okinawa, Japan.  In February 2004 the unit redeployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom II and participated in Operation VIGILANT RESOLVE.


In September 2004 SSgt Auwen was assigned as a Course Instructor at the NMITC and became the primary instructor for the Military Operations Other Than War (MOOTW) block in the MAGTF IS-E course.  While assigned there he served as a Course Coordinator, Curriculum Developer and earned the Master Training Specialist designation.


In September 2008 Gunnery Sergeant Auwen transitioned off active duty and back into the Marine Corps Reserves serving as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee with the Joint Reserve Intelligence Support Element - Selfridge/Wright Patterson which supports the Joint Analysis Center Molesworth, European Command.  He served as a Senior Analyst, a Branch SNCOIC and as the Senior Enlisted Leader.


In May 2012 First Sergeant Auwen was assigned as the Company 1stSgt for Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines at Selfridge ANG Base, MI and then in June 2015 he was assigned on a subsequent tour as the Company 1stSgt for Engineer Support Company, 6th Engineer Support Battalion at Battle Creek, MI.


In April 2016 Sergeant Major Auwen was promoted to his current rank and assigned as the Battalion Sergeant Major for the 1st Battalion, 24th Marines.


His personal awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (w/2 gold stars), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (w/2 gold stars), Army Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (w/ 1 bronze star).
