Sergeant Major Schaffer
Sergeant Major Schaffer is a native of Roanoke, Virginia. He completed his high school education in 1988 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in January 1990, he graduated from Basic Training as a Private First Class (Meritorious) in May 1990.
Following graduation from the Marine Combat Training in July 1990, Private First Class Schaffer was ordered to attend the Army’s Basic Airborne School at Fort Benning, GA. After successfully completing Basic Airborne as the Company Guide, Private First Class Schaffer was further ordered to Fort Lee, VA to attend Parachute Riggers Course. After completion, Private First Class Schaffer was ordered to Air Delivery Platoon, Okinawa, Japan where he deployed to Korea, the Kingdom of Thailand, and the Republic of the Philippines in support of theater security operations.
In October of 1991 Lance Corporal Schaffer requested orders to 2d Reconnaissance Battalion, 2d Marine Division. He was assigned as the Para-loft Chief and deployed numerous times in support of counter narcotics operations in the South-Western United States as part of JOINT TASK FORCE-6.
In 1994 2d Reconnaissance Battalion was deactivated and Corporal Schaffer received orders to Inspector-Instructor Staff, Company E, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage, Alaska. While stationed with Company E, Corporal Schaffer was meritoriously promoted to Sergeant and served as the Para-loft Chief and Reconnaissance Indoctrination Platoon Sergeant. In March 1998 Sergeant Schaffer requested and received orders to Drill Instructor Duty, MCRD San Diego. Sergeant Schaffer was recognized as the second place Honor Graduate of his drill instructor class.
Staff Sergeant Schaffer then received orders to 3d Reconnaissance Battalion, 3d Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan. Gunnery Sergeant Schaffer deployed numerous times as the Para-loft Chief through-out the Pacific Theater. Gunnery Sergeant Schaffer served as the Headquarters and Service Company, Company Gunnery Sergeant and in 2005 deployed with the Battalion in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
First Sergeant Schaffer then received orders to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, CA. serving as Company First Sergeant for Company C and deployed in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. After returning from Iraq, First Sergeant Schaffer was reassigned to Company A.
First Sergeant Schaffer then received orders to 3d Marine Logistics Group, Okinawa, Japan, and was assigned to Ammunition Company as the Company First Sergeant, and later as 3d Marine Logistics Group, Inspector General Chief.
In May of 2011, Sergeant Major Schaffer was promoted to his current rank, and assigned as the 9th Engineer Support Battalion (Team-Nine) Sergeant Major and deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Upon returning from Afghanistan, Sergeant Major executed orders to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, where he served from 2012 to 2015. Sergeant Major Schaffer then received orders to 23rd Marine Regiment where he will serve as the Inspector-Instructor Sergeant Major.
