Sergeant Major Mark A. Murphy enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve April 28, 1993 and entered recruit training at MCRD San Diego, California on January 3, 1994. In 1994 he attended Motor Vehicle Operator School in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Upon completion of Motor Vehicle Operator School, he assumed duties as a Motor Vehicle Operator in Headquarters Company 24th Marine Regiment, in Kansas City, Kansas.
In August 2000 he joined the 24th Marine Regimental Anti-Tank Platoon as a Driver/Radio Operator.
In January 2005, the 24th Marine Regimental Anti-Tank Platoon was activated in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and served as a part of a provisional military police company, Company C, 2nd Military Police Battalion. He served as a Section Leader during the deployment. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in August 2005.
In October 2006 he joined the Motor Transport Platoon, Headquarters Company, 24th Marine Regiment as the Motor Transport Operations Chief.
From October 2007 to June 2011 he served as the Headquarters Company, 24th Marine Regiment, Company Gunnery Sergeant. In October 2008 he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant.
In June of 2011, he assumed the duties as the Company First Sergeant of Headquarters Company, 24th Marine Regiment.
In May 2012, he was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant and was assigned to Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment in Springfield, Missouri.
In August 2013 Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment was redesignated as Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment.
In May 2016, he was assigned as the Company First Sergeant for Echo Company 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment in Des Moines, Iowa.
In March 2017, he was selected for promotion to Sergeant Major and assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 23 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.
Sergeant Major Murphy has a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology Degree with a Major in Construction Engineering Technology from Pittsburg State University.
Sergeant Major Murphy’s personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars, and the Navy Achievement Medal with gold star.
