Major Christian K. Portiss
Major Christian Portiss is a Tulsa, Oklahoma native. He is a graduate of Nathan Hale High School in Tulsa. Major Portiss enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves in 1990. Following Marine Combat Training and the School of Infantry he checked into Anti-Tank (TOW) Company in Broken Arrow in 1991 as an 0352 anti-tank assault guided missile-man. During his enlisted career he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and held billets ranging from Driver/Assistant Gunner up to Section Leader. During his enlistment in Broken Arrow Major Portiss attended the Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (Level C) course at Naval Air Station North Island.
Major Portiss graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Arts – History in 1998. After graduation he attended Officer Candidates Course and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Major Portiss attended the Basic School and Infantry Officers Course. He was assigned to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion as a Platoon Commander. While assigned to 1st LAR Major Portiss attended Light Armored Vehicle Leaders Course, Winter Mountain Leaders Course, Military Operations on Urbanized Terrain instructor’s course, Cavalry Leaders Course (U.S. Army), and attained a Green Belt Instructor tab in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program.
Major Portiss deployed as an LAR Company Executive Officer with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (BLT-3/1) and in support of Regimental Combat Team-5 during the initial invasion of Iraq. Following his return from these two deployments Major Portiss was transferred to Salt Lake City, Utah as the Inspector/Instructor of Company F(-) 2nd Battalion 23rd Marines. After his tour in Utah Major Portiss resigned his active commission and re-joined the Selected Marine Corps Reserves in 2008. Major Portiss held multiple billets before coming back to Broken Arrow as the Commanding Officer of Anti-Tank Training Company. Since being assigned as the Commanding Officer Major Portiss has graduated from the Command and Staff course. His personal decorations are the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation medal, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement medal with Combat “V”, and the Combat Action ribbon.
