Jacob W. Phillips enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, in 1993, at the age of 17. After completing recruit training at MCRD San Diego and combat training at MCB Camp Pendleton, he spent the next year at MCAGCC 29 Palms where he completed his MOS training as a MultiChannel Radio Technician. In 1995, after being released from active duty, Lance Corporal Phillips joined MWCS-48, at MCAS El Toro.
While assigned to MWCS-48, he served in numerous billets, including Radio Operator, Radio Technician, Maintenance Supervisor, and Platoon Sergeant. In 2003, Sergeant Phillips was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While deployed, Sergeant Phillips served in a variety of areas throughout Iraq/Kuwait and was released from active duty later that year. In 2004 Staff Sergeant Phillips left MWCS-48, became an Individual Mobilization Augmentee at MCAS Miramar, and worked on active duty, as a Watch Commander with the Provost Marshall’s Office. In 2006 Gunnery Sergeant Phillips joined the 3rd Civil Affairs Group, MCB Camp Pendleton, where he served as a Civil Affairs Team Leader, Detachment SNOIC, and the Group Gunnery Sergeant.
In 2008, Gunnery Sergeant Phillips relocated his family from California to Indiana; he transferred to an IMA billet with the Marine Corps Mobilization Command. He completed the Combat Marksmanship Trainer course and was regularly placed on orders to run rifle & pistol ranges for senior IMA Officers and SNCOs from around the world. In 2010, Gunnery Sergeant Phillips joined Det 2 Electronics Maintenance Company, in Indianapolis, as the Senior Enlisted Advisor. In 2011, he transferred to serve in a joint billet, as a Protocol Officer with U.S. Strategic Command, at Offutt Air Force base in Omaha, NE. In 2012 First Sergeant Phillips was assigned to Delta Company, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion in Knoxville, TN. In 2015 he transferred to H&S Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 453 in Aurora, CO. In 2016, Sergeant Major Phillips was assigned to serve with 6th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Co (ANGLICO) in Concord, Ca. He has attended the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Course and completed the Joint Forces Senior Enlisted Course. His personal awards include the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
Sergeant Major Phillips has been happily married for 20 years and has four children. He is a retired Police Officer from Los Angeles County, who has worked as a contractor for the Dept. of the Navy since 2009; initially as a Weapons Instructor for Special Operations Command where he was embedded with teams in Afghanistan. He currently works in the development and Life Cycle Logistics in support of Joint Counter Remote IED Electronic Warfare (J-CREW). He regularly volunteers with teens from his church, is on the Board of Directors for a local High School Football Program, and has served as a Volunteer Firefighter (and Chaplain) in Indiana since 2010.
