Renowned Reservist: Capt. Robert Tebben
Renowned Reservist Capt. Robert Tebben, a civil affairs officer with, 3d Civil Affairs Group, Force Headquarters Group, Marine Force Reserve and a mechanical engineer with Bayer in Urbandale, Iowa, participated in Balikatan 23 as a civil affairs team leader in Ilocos Norte, Philippines, May 8, 2023. The Ankeny, Iowa native, joined the Marine Corps Reserve to fulfill his need to serve his country while allowing him to be near his family.
“I am thrilled that I joined the Reserves because I can stay close to home and my parents, it provides a stable life for my two young kids.” said Tebben.
Tebben went on to explain that the Marine Corps provided him many opportunities that he could not have had in his civilian life such as leading large groups of people, learning new skills, and traveling to different places like the United Kingdom, Panama, and the Philippines. During his time, Tebben has participated in many operations such as community relations projects, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions and the occasional field training exercise.
“You get out of it what you put into it,” explained Tebben. “If you come into the Reserves with a positive attitude and you want to get the most out of your time that you can, then that’s exactly what’s going to happen and it’s going to be a great time.”
Armed Forces of the Philippines and U.S. military connected with local communities to give a better understanding of the purpose of Balikatan 23. Balikatan, Tagalog for “shoulder-to-shoulder,” is an annual bilateral exercise between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the U.S. military. The exercise provides unique opportunities for participating forces to increase interoperability and provide tangible benefits for the people of the Philippines.
