Sergeant Major Gilbertson was born in Clarkston, Washington and enlisted in the Marine Corps in November 1993.  He graduated Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California, being meritoriously promoted to the rank of Private First Class (PFC).  Upon graduation he reported to the School of Infantry (SOI), Camp Pendleton, California, for assignment as a 0311 rifleman.
  
After graduating SOI, PFC Gilbertson was assigned to Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 29 Palms California, where he served as a Rifleman, Team Leader, Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant from April of 1994 to November of 1997.  During this time he participated in Joint Task Force-6, deployed twice to Okinawa and deployed to Qatar in support of Exercise Indigo Desert 95.  During this tour he was promoted to Sergeant.    
 
In November of 1997, upon completion of his active duty enlistment, Sergeant Gilbertson transferred to the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR). 

In May of 1998, Sergeant Gilbertson transferred from the IRR and joined the Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR) and was assigned to Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion, 14th Marines, Spokane, Washington.  Sergeant Gilbertson served as a Section Chief, Platoon Sergeant and Battery Gunnery Sergeant.  In October of 2000 Sergeant Gilbertson was promoted to Staff Sergeant.

In June of 2004, while assigned to Papa Battery, 5th Battalion, 14th Marines, Staff Sergeant Gilbertson deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Upon the completion of the deployment Staff Sergeant Gilbertson transferred from the SMCR to the IRR.

In June of 2007, Staff Sergeant Gilbertson transferred from the IRR and was once again assigned to Papa Battery as a Platoon Sergeant and deployed to Iraq for a second time in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. 

Staff Sergeant Gilbertson was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in June of 2008 and continued to serve with Papa Battery as a Platoon Commander.
In March of 2010, Gunnery Sergeant Gilbertson transferred to the Peacetime Wartime Support Team (PWST), Mobilization Command assigned to Boise, Idaho as the Administrative and Training Chief.

In June of 2013, Gunnery Sergeant Gilbertson was selected to the rank of First Sergeant and was reassigned to Papa Battery, 5th Battalion, 14th Marines, Spokane Washington, as the Battery First Sergeant.

In July of 2017, First Sergeant Gilbertson was reassigned to Headquarters and Support Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 23, Joint Base Lewis-McCord Washington, as the Company First Sergeant.

In April of 2018, First Sergeant Gilbertson was selected to the rank of Sergeant Major and assigned to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 112, as the Squadron Sergeant Major.   

His personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award.
