Sergeant Major Carl J. Woods

Marine Transport Squadron 1

Sergeant Major Woods enlisted in the Marine Corps in November 2002 and conducted recruit training at MCRD Parris Island.  Upon completion, he reported to the School of Infantry, where he earned the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 0311.  Upon graduation, he reported to Marine Corps Security Forces Training Command, earning additional MOS's and later reporting to Kings Bay, GA.  He would serve as Close Quarters Team member, Assistant Team Leader and Team Leader.  During this tour, he would promote from Private to Sergeant. 

In January 2007, Sergeant Woods reported to 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he served as a Scout Squad Leader and Lead Scout.  During this tour, he deployed Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  In 2009, he attended Infantry Squad Leaders Course where he finished first in his class.

In January 2010, Sergeant Woods reported to Drill Instructor School at MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina.  Upon graduation, he reported to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion where he served as Drill Instructor.  During this tour, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 2012 in reported to Weapons and Field Training Battalion where he served as Chief Instructor of Basic Warrior Training, Chief Instructor of the Crucible, Chief Rappel Master, and SNCOIC of the Parris Island Funeral Detail.

In March 2013, Staff Sergeant Woods reported to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines where he served in Weapons Company as the Platoon Sergeant for the Combined Anti-Armor Team and Weapons Company Operations Chief.  He deployed to Okinawa, Japan on the Unit Deployment Program.  He was selected to become a Foreign Advisor and in May 2014 deployed to the United Arab Emirates.  

In March of 2016, Staff Sergeant Woods executed orders to Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, Kings Bay, GA where he served as Platoon Sergeant, Company Gunnery Sergeant, and Battalion Operations Chief. During this tour he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. 

In March of 2019, Gunnery Sergeant Woods executed orders to 2d Intelligence Battalion as the Ground Sensor Platoon Operations Chief.  He participated in Operation Javelina Thunder in support of JTF-N and United States Customs and Border Patrol in Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

In October of 2020, he was promoted to First Sergeant and assigned to 2d Battalion, 8th Marines as the Company G First Sergeant. He deployed on UDP 21.2 to Okinawa, Japan.

In April of 2022, First Sergeant Woods was assigned to 2D Supply Battalion.  In January 2023 he attended the Senior Enlisted Joint PME Blended Seminar Course in Quantico, VA where he was recognized as the Distinguished Graduate.

In November 2023, he was selected to the rank of Sergeant Major and received orders to Marine Transport Squadron (VMR) 1 in Fort Worth, TX as the Squadron Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Woods' personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (fifth award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (fourth award), Combat Action Ribbon, Combat Action Ribbon, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
