First Sergeant Patrick J. Gartland

First Sergeant Gartland is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on 3 August 2003.  He attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina.  After graduating Recruit training he attend Marine Combat Training (MCT) at Camp Geiger, North Carolina.  Following the completion of MCT, he attended Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) school at Naval Air Station Meridian, Mississippi for Aviation Operations Specialist Course (7041). In February of 2004, Pvt Gartland was promoted to the rank of Private First Class. In March of 2004, PFC Gartland received orders to 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan.  While serving as Operations Clerk in the G-3 Operations department, PFC Gartland deployed to Camp Humphries, Korea in support of Ulchi Focus Lens (UFL).  In October 2004, he was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.  In January of 2005, LCpl Gartland was ordered to report to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron - 775 Det Alpha, Joint Reserve Training Facility, Johnstown, Pennsylvania.  While serving as Operations and Training Non-Commissioned Officer, he was immediately deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom in Al Taqqadum, Iraq from March 2005 until October 2005.  While serving as the sole Aviation Operations Specialists, he supported multiple detachments across the Continental United States for service level training.  In October of 2006, LCpl Gartland was promoted the rank of Corporal. Cpl Gartland was then ordered to report to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron - 161, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California in January of 2008.  While Serving as the Operations and Training NCOIC, Cpl Gartland deployed to Al Taqqadum, Iraq in August of 2008 again.  Cpl Gartland was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in October of 2008.  Sgt Gartland returned to Marine Corps Air station Miramar, California in April of 2009 where he assumed the role of Operations Chief.  Sgt Gartland then received orders to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron - 163 Reinforced to deploy as the Aviation Combat Element Operations Chief aboard the USS Boxer for the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.  He was deployed and supported Operations in the Middle East from February 2011 through September 2011.  Upon return Sgt Gartland reported to Drill Instructor School at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA.  Upon Graduation, he reported to Company B, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment. Sgt Gartland served as Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, Chief Drill Instructor and Battalion Operations Chief. Sgt Gartland was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant on 1 January 2014.  Upon completed of Drill Instructor Duty, SSgt Gartland reported to 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC to serve as the Current Operations Chief in G3 Operations. SSgt Gartland was then ordered to report to Marine Tiltrotor Squadron - 264 Reinforced in December of 2015 to serve once again as Aviation Combat Element Operations Chief, 22D Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS Wasp.  SSgt Gartland supported operations in Northern Africa and the Middle East while deployed from June 2016 through December 2016.  Upon return SSgt Gartland was selected to serve as Assistant Marine Officer Instructor (AMOI) at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA.  While serving as the AMOI he also participated in three summer session of Officer Candidate School, serving as Sergeant Instructor and Platoon Sergeant.  SSgt Gartland was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant on 1 July 2018.  Upon completion of AMOI Duty, GySgt Gartland reported to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina to serve as Airfield Operations Chief from April 2020 until January 2021.  GySgt Gartland was then requested to serve as Marine Aircraft Group 31, MCAS Beaufort, SC Operations Chief and Personnel Suppert Detachment Senior Enlisted in January 2021 until January 2022.   He was then selected and promoted (frocked) to the rank of First Sergeant on 6 January 2022 and subsequently received orders to Company O, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC to serve as the Senior Enlisted Leader from January 2023 until March 2023.  1stSgt Gartland received orders to 4th Air/Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, Force Headquarters Group, Marine Forces Reserve, West Palm Beach, FL in April 2023 where he is currently serving Inspector and Instructor 1stSgt.

1stSgt Gartland's personal awards include Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 1 Silver Star and 1 Gold Star in lieu of 7th award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 2 gold stars in lieu of 3rd Award, and Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.  1stSgt Gartland holds a Bachelors of Arts Degree in History with a concentration in American History from Southern New Hampshire University.
