First Sergeant Gutierrez enlisted in the Marine Corps in November of 1996. In January of 1997, he reported to MCRD San Diego, for recruit training. Upon graduation he proceeded to Camp Pendleton to attend Marine Combat Training. In September of 1997, he attended Field Artillery School at Ft. Sill, OK. After completion, he reported to November Battery, 5/14 as a field artillery cannonier in the Marine Corps Reserves in El Paso, Texas. He promoted billets up to Section Chief on the gun-line up until 2003 where he was promoted to Sergeant.
In 2003, Sergeant Gutierrez signed a 3 year active duty contract and reported to I MEF Headquarters Group in Camp Pendleton, California in December of 2003.
In January of 2004, he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as NCOIC on a tactical team supporting the local Iraq Police Force, the ICDC. This training assignment was a direct result of his civilian police experience. In March of 2005, Sergeant Gutierrez concluded his active duty contract with numerous awards from this combat deployment.
In January of 2008, Sergeant Gutierrez enlisted into the Marine Corps Reserves once again in El Paso, TX to now re-classified Delta Battery 2/14. Sergeant Gutierrez began OJT for the newly employed HIMARS system that had now replaced the howitzers at the Battery. Sergeant Gutierrez learned the complex weapon system, moving up billets from Gunner to Launcher Chief.
In 2010, Staff Sergeant Gutierrez assumed the billet of Security Chief for Delta Battery. In 2016, Staff Sergeant Gutierrez assumed the billet of Platoon Sergeant until his promotion to Gunnery Sergeant. In 2017, Gunnery Sergeant Gutierrez assumed the billet of Battery Gunnery Sergeant while also serving as the Battery First Sergeant due to the unit being gapped this position. Gunnery Sergeant Gutierrez was instrumental in making artillery history during this time as his HIMARS launcher was the first to complete a C-130 Hirain insertion and firing evolution, in the entire Marine Corps.
In June 2020, First Sergeant Gutierrez was frocked to his current rank and in July 2020 was assigned to Weapons Company, 1/23 as the Company First Sergeant in Austin TX.
In May 2023, First Sergeant Gutierrez was assigned to Battery D, 2/14 in El Paso, TX as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader.
In January 2026, First Sergeant Gutierrez was assigned to his current billet as Unit Senior Enlisted Leader at HQ Company, 4th Law Enforcement Battalion.
First Sergeant Gutierrez's personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two Gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and St. Babs Artillery medal.
First Sergeant Gutierrez has a Bachelor of Science in Multi-Disciplinary Studies from the University of Texas at El Paso where he graduated Magna Cum Laude.
