Lieutenant Colonel John C. Huenefeld II

Lieutenant Colonel Huenefeld graduated from the University of California, San Diego in 2003 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps the same year. After completing The Basic School and Field Artillery Officer Basic Course in 2004, he reported to Battery R, 5th Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment in Camp Pendleton, California. From 2004 to 2008, he held the positions of Forward Observer, Artillery Liaison Officer, Platoon Commander, Fire Direction Officer, and Assistant Battalion Operations Officer. He deployed twice to Operation Iraqi Freedom, and once on the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit as Forward Observer with Battalion Landing Team 1/4.

In 2008, he was trained as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller and reported to 5th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company in Okinawa, Japan. From 2008 to 2010, he held the positions of Firepower Control Team Leader, Supporting Arms Liaison Team Detachment Officer-in-Charge, and Brigade Platoon Commander. He deployed a third time to Operation Iraqi Freedom, and once on the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. He was also promoted to rank of Captain.

In 2010, Captain Huenefeld reported to 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company in Camp Pendleton, California, and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2011. Captain Huenefeld then attended the U.S. Army Field Artillery Captains Career Course in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Following graduation, Captain Huenefeld was assigned to 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii in 2012. During this tour he commanded and deployed Battery A on the Unit Deployment Program to Okinawa, Japan, and held the billets of Battalion Logistics Officer and Battalion Executive Officer. He was promoted to the rank of Major in April 2015.

In 2015, Major Huenefeld was assigned to The Basic School where he served as Protocol Officer, Current Operations Officer, and Company Commander for Company E, 5-16, and Company C, 3-17. Following this assignment, Major Huenefeld attended Marine Corps Command and Staff College in 2018. In 2019, Major Huenefeld was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, in Okinawa, Japan, where he served as the Battalion Operations Officer. In 2020, he was reassigned as the 12th Marine Regiment Operations Officer, and then Regiment Executive Officer. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in December 2020. 

In June 2022, Lieutenant Colonel Huenefeld assumed duties as Inspector-Instructor, 3d Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, in Bell, California.

Lieutenant Colonel Huenefeld is a Distinguished Honor Graduate of the U.S. Army Field Artillery Captains Career Course, and a Distinguished Graduate of Marine Corps Command and Staff College. He holds a Master’s Degree in Military Studies from Marine Corps University. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
