Sergeant Major Esparza is a native of El Paso, Texas.  He attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California and graduated March of 1995.  Upon completing the School of Infantry in Camp Pendleton, California Private First Class Esparza earned the military occupational specialty of 0311 (Rifleman) and was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal.  Lance Corporal Esparza received orders to Company E, 2d Battalion 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California where he served as Rifleman, Fire Team Leader and Squad Leader.  While at Company E, he was promoted to Corporal and Sergeant.  During this tour, he deployed twice with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.

 

In February of 1999, Sergeant Esparza transferred to the Selected Marine Corps Reserve and reported to Company D, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Sergeant Esparza served as Recon Man, Assistant Team Leader and Team Leader.  In December of 2000, he reported to Battery D, 2d Battalion, 14th Marines, 4th Marine Division in El Paso, Texas.  During that period, he attended the Ammunition Technician Course in Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.  

 

Following graduation in October of 2001, he served as Battery Ammunition Technician and Battery Ammunition Chief.  Sergeant Esparza was promoted to Staff Sergeant and graduated from the Resident Career Course in July of 2003.  In January of 2005, Battery D was mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 04-06 as a provisional Military Police Company.  While assigned to Company B, 2d Military Police Battalion, 2d Marine Logistics Group, Al Taqaddum, Iraq he served as Platoon Sergeant and Platoon Commander.  After this tour in Iraq, he returned to Battery D and served as Local Security Chief.  He graduated from the Resident Advanced Course in July of 2006.

 

In October of 2006, Staff Sergeant Esparza reported to H&S Company, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division in San Antonio, Texas and mobilized, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-08 in October of 2006.  He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in November of 2006.  While assigned to H&S Company in Al Asad, Iraq he served as Company Gunnery Sergeant and Senior Watch Officer.

 

In December of 2007, Gunnery Sergeant Esparza reported to Company D, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion where he served as Company Gunnery Sergeant.  He was promoted to First Sergeant in June of 2010 and served as Company First Sergeant of Company C, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion in San Antonio, Texas until May of 2013.  In May of 2013, he reported to Truck Co, 23d Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division in Las Vegas, Nevada where he served as Company First Sergeant until April of 2015.  He was then promoted to Sergeant Major in April of 2015 and served as Battalion Sergeant Major of 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division in Camp Pendleton, California until April of 2018.  In May of 2018, Sergeant Major Esparza reported to 23d Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, San Bruno, California where he currently serves as Regimental Sergeant Major.

 

Sergeant Major Esparza is a graduate of Command & Staff College and Expeditionary Warfare School Distance Education Programs.  He graduated from Park University and has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration.  He also graduated from Webster University and has a Master of Arts in Management and Leadership.  He has been a Police Officer for eighteen years and is currently serving as a SWAT Operator and Patrol Officer.
