Sergeant Major Ricardo Ojeda

Sergeant Major Ojeda, a native of Nogales, Mexico, enlisted in the Marine Corps on June 1990. He completed recruit training with 2d Battalion, Hotel Company, MCRD San Diego, California on August 31, 1990. 

After completing Marine Combat Training and School of Infantry PFC Ojeda was assigned to 7th Marine Regiment at 29 Palms, California.  He was meritoriously promoted to Corporal in 1992, to Sergeant in 1994 and was the Honor Graduate for Sergeants Course in 1995.  His billets included fire team leader, squad leader, and platoon sergeant.  During his time with 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines he participated in the Unit Deployment Program, Korean Integrated Training Program with 1st Republic of Korea Marine Division, and Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Operation Sea Dragon/Hunter Warrior.  He was honorably discharged in November 1996 and enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ.    

In May 1999 Sergeant Ojeda joined the Select Marine Corps Reserve with Bulk Fuel Company A, 6th Engineer Support Battalion in Tucson, Arizona and served as platoon sergeant, platoon commander, operations chief, and company gunnery sergeant.  He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in February 2000.  In April 2003 SSgt Ojeda dropped to the Individual Ready Reserve to complete student-teaching commitments.  He returned to the reserves in May 2007 and was activated a few months later to deploy as a rifle platoon commander with 8th Provisional Security Company, Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa in Djibouti, Africa from March 2008 through October 2009.  During pre-deployment training at Camp Lejeune, NC he attended the Basic Urban Survival Training Instructor Course and Substance Abuse Control Officer Course.  Upon his return from Africa SSgt Ojeda served as Chief Instructor for several Corporals Courses until his reassignment to Bulk Fuel Company C in Glendale, Arizona in August 2010.    

In December 2010 he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and assumed the role of company gunnery sergeant.  GySgt Ojeda was mobilized for Operation Enduring Freedom with Combat Logistics Battalion 6 and deployed to the Helmand Province, Afghanistan from August 2011 through February 2012 conducting counterinsurgency operations as RCT-8 Operation Eastern Storm.  He returned to Bulk Fuel Company C in March 2012 and resumed duties as company gunnery sergeant until he was activated once more for his second deployment to Afghanistan with R4OG, II MEF (Fwd), RC-Southwest as the Retrograde Operations Company Senior Enlisted Leader from November 2013 through May 2014.  While deployed he was selected for promotion to First Sergeant. 

After returning from Afghanistan 1stSgt Ojeda was frocked and reassigned to Delta Company, 4th Tank Battalion in 29 Palms, CA and attended the First Sergeants Course and 1stSgt/E8 Seminar.  In May 2018 1stSgt Ojeda was activated yet once more and reassigned to Echo Company 2d Battalion, 23rd Marines for UDP 19.1.  1stSgt Ojeda took part in Exercises Fuji Viper and Forest Light 19.2 strengthening bilateral relations with our Pacific region allies.  During this deployment he was selected for promotion to Sergeant Major and was frocked on 11 August 2019. 

SgtMaj Ojeda is currently the Sergeant Major for 3d Air-Naval Gunfire Liaison Company out of Bell, California.  

SgtMaj Ojeda holds a BA in Secondary Education and History Summa Cum Laude from the University of Arizona.  His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star, Good Conduct Medal with one bronze star, and Select Marine Corps Reserve Medal with four bronze stars.
