First Sergeant Matthew S. Baldwin

Matthew Baldwin is a native of Rileyville, Virginia and enlisted in the Marine Corps in December 2005.  Private Baldwin completed recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina in July 2006.  Upon graduation from boot camp, he was meritoriously promoted to private first class and reported to 29 Palms, California for Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) training.  Private First Class Baldwin graduated in December 2006 with the designated MOS of 7234 Air Command and Control Electronics Operator. Upon completion of MOS training, PFC Baldwin reported to Marine Air Control Squadron 24 (MACS-24) in Virginia Beach, Virginia where he served as an operator in the Tactical Air Operations Center.  From 2006 to 2009 he achieved qualifications as a Data Link Coordinator and Surveillance Identification Director and was meritoriously promoted to corporal.  In April 2009 Corporal Baldwin was activated for deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Corporal Baldwin served as a Surveillance Identification Director in the Early Warning and Control Center (EW/C), Air Support Plotter at the Direct Air Support Center (DASC) and worked in the Close Battle Cell at the Tactical Air Command Center (TACC) while deployed to Al Asad, Iraq.  In July 2010 he was promoted to Sergeant and shortly after accepted Active Reserve (AR) orders at MACS-24 for a four year enlistment.  During his four years on active reserve orders, he trained in Tactical Data Links, air-to-air warfare and attended his upgrade MOS school as a Tactical Air Defense Controller, MOS 7236 where he finished as honor graduate.  Sergeant Baldwin was selected to attend the Navy Strike Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) course as an Air Intercept Controller (AIC) where he graduated as the AIC honor graduate in 2013.  He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in 2014 and completed his four years of AR in October 2014 where he transitioned back to the SMCR at MACS-24.  In 2017 he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant.  Gunnery Sergeant Baldwin mobilized for deployment from December 2018 to June 2019 in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the Combined Defense of the Arabian Peninsula and the Resolute Support Mission leading a six Marine team integrating with the USAF Control and Reporting Center (CRC).  He served as the Marine detachment Staff Noncommissioned Officer in charge of the joint CRC which controlled over 19,300 combat sorties for coalition aircraft.  Upon returning from deployment, Gunnery Sergeant Baldwin was mobilized and activated for deployment again from May 2020 to December 2020 in support of the same mission where he led a new six Marine team integrating with the USAF CRC.  Gunnery Sergeant Baldwin served as the Operation Inherent Resolve subject matter expert, rewriting standard operating procedures for anti-air warfare, close air support, and air-to-air refueling for Iraq and Syria operations.  Gunnery Sergeant Baldwin was promoted to First Sergeant in September of 2021 and reported to Mike Battery, 3rd Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment to serve as Battery First Sergeant until April 2023.  In October 2023, First Sergeant Baldwin reported to Echo Company, 2d Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment to serve as Company First Sergeant.  First Sergeant Baldwin's awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2) and the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.  First Sergeant Baldwin is currently employed as an Air Operations Subject Matter Expert with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, J6 Directorate, Demonstrations Branch Section in Suffolk, Virginia.
