Colonel Daniel Jarl is a native of Stockholm, Sweden and emigrated to the United States in December 1981. He grew up in Georgia and graduated from The Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Aerospace Engineering in March 1999. Upon Graduation he accepted a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Following graduation from The Basic School, Second Lieutenant Jarl reported to NAS Pensacola to begin Flight School. Captain Jarl received his wings in 2003 and was subsequently transferred to VMFAT-101 at MCAS Miramar, California to begin his training as a Weapons and Sensors Officer in the F/A-18D Hornet. In 2004 Captain Jarl completed his training and was assigned to VMFA(AW)-242 “Bats” at Miramar. In August 2004 he deployed with the “Bats” to Al Asad, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) 2. In February 2006 Captain Jarl deployed to Al Udied, Qatar to serve as the Marine Liaison Officer at the Combined Air Operation Center. In September 2006 he left Qatar to join the “Bats” at Al Asad, Iraq and spent the next 7 months flying in support of OIF 5.7. In total Captain Jarl amassed 700 combat hours and nearly 400 combat sorties while with the “Bats”. In April 2007 Captain Jarl attended Terminal Air Control Party School at Expeditionary Warfare Training Group Pacific in Coronado, California and was designated as a Forward Air Controller. Following TACP School Captain Jarl reported to Camp Pendleton, California to serve as an Air Officer with 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO) in June 2007. Captain Jarl deployed to Iraq with ANGLICO from March until October 2008 in support of OIF 8.1. While there he supported the First Iraqi Army Division, First Brigade throughout the country as part of the National Quick Reaction Force. During these operations Captain Jarl filled the roles of both an Air Officer and a Fire Power Control Team Leader. Upon returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom Major Jarl was assigned as a Brigade Platoon Commander at 1st ANGLICO. On September 1, 2009 Major Jarl left active duty and checked into 3rd ANGLICO as a Reserve Officer. Upon arriving at 3rd ANGLICO Major Jarl was assigned as a Brigade Platoon Commander. He planned and led several detachments including African Lion, Mountain Warfare Exercise, and several Scorpion Fire Exercises. In 2012 Major Jarl was designated as the Detachment Kilo Commander for deployment to Afghanistan supporting Georgian Liaison Team (GLT) 10. While in Afghanistan he acted as both the Detachment Commander for Det K and as the GLT 10 Executive Officer. Returning to 3 rd ANGLICO in 2014 after the deployment Major Jarl served as the Operations Officer. From February of 2015 to April 2017 Lieutenant Colonel Jarl commanded 4 th ANGLICO in West Palm Beach Florida. While in command he mobilized and deployed several detachments in support of combat operations in the CENTCOM AOR and exercises around the world. Following command Lieutenant Colonel Jarl was selected to attend the National War College in Washington DC. Lieutenant Colonel Jarl attended the National War College and graduated in June of 2018 with a masters degree in National Security Strategy and with a European Concentration from the Eisenhower School. Lieutenant Colonel Jarl was then assigned to Headquarters Marine Corps, Plans Policy & Operations, National Plans Branch in the Pentagon. While there he served as the subject matter expert for a region and helped shape policy and plans for that region. He frequently briefed the senior leadership of the Marine Corps and the Department of the Navy in this role. In June of 2019 Lieutenant Colonel Jarl was reassigned to Marine Corps Advisor Company A to serve as the Operations Officer. After checking in he was selected for promotion to Colonel and shortly thereafter was command screened and selected as the Deputy Commander/Senior Reserve Advisor for Marine Aircraft Group 41. Colonel Jarl’s personal decorations include the Bronze Star with Combat “V”, Meritorious Service Medal with star in lieu of second award, Air Medal (Individual Action, Strike/Flight Numeral 15), Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon with star in lieu of second award. He was also awarded the General Mazniashvili Medal by the Republic of Georgia.
