Lieutenant Colonel Yasumatsu is a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, and a graduate of Virginia Tech, where he received a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering. Commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps in May of 2002, he was designated an Aviator in May of 2005. Following Fleet Replacement Squadron training in Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, he was assigned to Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Training Squadron 242, the “Bats” in May of 2007.
Captain Yasumatsu served as Adjutant in the “Bats” before transferring to Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 225, the “Vikings” when the “Bats” transferred to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni. In July of 2008, he deployed to Al Udeid Air Base as an individual augmentee Master Air Attack Planner. In March of 2009, Captain Yasumatsu deployed to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in support of the Unit Deployment Program, serving as Schedule Writer and Ground Training Officer. In May of 2010, he transferred to the 11th Marine Regiment to serve as Air Officer. While at the 11th Marine Regiment, Captain Yasumatsu graduated from the Air Officer Course. He joined the “Bats” again in May of 2011, where he served as Aviation Life Support Systems Division Officer, Director of Safety and Standardization, and Aviation Safety Officer. Transferring to Marine Aircraft Group 12, Major Yasumatsu served as Assistant Current Operations Officer, Director of Safety and Standardization, and Aviation Safety Officer.
Joining the Selected Marine Corps Reserve in June of 2014, Major Yasumatsu joined Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 112, the “Cowboys” where he served for over five years as Adjutant, Administration Officer, and Operations Officer. In May of 2020, Lieutenant Colonel Yasumatsu transferred to Marine Aircraft Group 41, serving as Reserve Operations Officer and presently as Executive Officer.
Lieutenant Colonel Yasumatsu flew over 1,500 mishap-free hours in the F/A-18. His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and Joint Service Achievement Medal. Lieutenant Colonel Yasumatsu is married with one son.
