First Sergeant King enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves and reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina for training in January, 2002 followed by the School of Infantry East for Marine Combat Training. She then reported to Camp Johnson, Jacksonville, North Carolina for Military Occupational School where she earned the rank of Private First Class and the MOS of 0151, Administrative Clerk.

Upon completion of school, Pfc. King reported for duty to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 773, Naval Air Station Atlanta in August, 2002. She spent 14 months as a drilling reservist, earning the rank of Lance Corporal while pursuing a degree in journalism from Georgia State University.  In December 2003, Lance Cpl. King was mobilized to active duty in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. From April 2004 to April 2005 she was temporarily assigned to Marine Central Command as the administrative clerk for HMLA-773. Lance Cpl. King was meritoriously promoted to Corporal in March 2005. 

In June 2006, Cpl. King enlisted into the active duty component of the Marine Corps and in October, 2006, she completed the Basic Public Affairs Specialist – Writer Course at the Defense Information School in Fort Meade, Maryland to become a 4341, combat correspondent. In December, 2006, Cpl. King was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma where she served as a writer and editor for the Desert Warrior newspaper and the community relations chief for MCAS Yuma public affairs.

In January 2010, Sgt. King reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island for Drill Instructor duty and in June of 2013 was awarded the Drill Instructor Ribbon after successful completion of the tour.  In July 2013, Sgt. King was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort as the press chief for the Jet Stream newspaper. 

In August 2014, Staff Sergeant King reported to I Marine Expeditionary Force where she served as the public affairs current operations chief. She then deployed to Kuwait and Iraq with the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Central Command as the public affairs chief from December 2014 through May 2015. She next served as public affairs chief for the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit where she deployed from February 2016 through September 2016 for Western Pacific Deployment 16-1.

Gunnery Sergeant King returned to Parris Island as a Chief Drill Instructor and Headquarters Battalion First Sergeant at 4th Recruit Training Battalion, from 2017 to 2019. After a successful tour she moved on to Norfolk, Va. to serve as the Communications Strategy and Operations Chief for Marine Corps Forces Command from June 2019 to June 2021.

First Sergeant King is currently serving in Hialeah, Florida at the 4th Civil Affairs Group.

First Sergeant King’s personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award and Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award.
