Commanding Officer, Marine Transport Squadron Andrews Lieutenant Colonel Richard "Odie" Young

Lieutenant Colonel Young was commissioned a Second Lieutenant.   Upon graduation from The Basic School in Quantico, VA, he reported to NAS Pensacola, where he completed flight training and was designated a naval aviator in June 1998. 

He reported to HMT-301 aboard MCAS Kaneohe Bay, HI, in July 1998, transitioning to the CH-53D helicopter.  His initial Fleet Marine Force duty was with HMH-363 at MCAS Kaneohe Bay where he was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1998.  He served in Operations as the Ground Training, Pilot Training and Assistant Operations Officer and also held the billet of Airframes Officer. 

Following his tour at HMH-363 he reported to the 1st Marine Corps District in June 2001 and filled the billet of Officer Selection Officer in Philadelphia, PA.  Upon the completion of his successful three-year recruiting tour he reported to HQMC and worked in the Freedom of Information Act Office in August 2004.  He was promoted to Major in January 2005. 

In November 2005 he was selected to the Active Reserve program as a CH-53E pilot and was transferred to HMH-772 at NAS Willow Grove, PA.  During his tour at HMH-772 he filled the billet of Aviation Safety Officer, Operations Officer and Executive Officer.  In 2009 he deployed to Camp Bastion, Afghanistan for a seven month deployment in support of OEF. 

Upon return from his deployment he was selected and subsequently promoted to his current rank in August 2010.  During this month he was transferred to MAG-49 to fill the billet of Assistant Operations Officer, and additional assignments as the ACE Operations Officer for Marine Week St. Louis in 2011 and Javelin Thrust in 2012.

In August 2012, he reported to Headquarters Marine Corps, Deputy Commandant for Aviation, to serve in the Aviation Manpower and Support Branch (ASM) as the Reserve Manpower Analyst.  His personal decorations include Meritorious Service Medal (with 1 Gold Star), Air Medal with strike/flight numeral four, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 2 Gold Stars.
