Colonel Joseph A. Katz
Chief of Staff
U.S. Marine Corps Forces Reserve

Colonel Katz is a native of Boston, Massachusetts and enlisted in the Marine Corps in February 1995, serving as a rifleman with A Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines.  He commissioned through the Platoon Leaders Class upon graduating from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in June 1998.

Colonel Katz’s command assignments include Motor Transport Platoon Commander, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division; Transportation Company Commander, Combat Logistics Battalion-5, 1st Marine Logistics Group; Bravo Company Commander, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division.  Commanding Officer Combat Logistics Battalion-25, 4th Marine Logistics Group.   Deputy Commander, Combat Logistics Regiment-4, 4th Marine Logistics Group.

Colonel Katz’s staff assignments include Maintenance Management Officer, Assistant Logistics Officer, and Logistics Officer, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, where he deployed with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) in 2002; Logistics Management Specialist, Marine Corps Systems Command; 7th Division Military Transition Team Logistics Advisor to the 7th Iraqi Army Division, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Fallujah Iraq, from Sept. 2005 to Feb. 2006; Operations Officer, Combat Logistics Battalion-5; Operations Officer, Combat Logistics Regiment-1, 1st Marine Logistics Group; Executive Officer, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division; Operations Officer and R4 OIC, Marine Corps Logistics Command Forward, Operation Enduring Freedom, Helmand Province, Afghanistan June 2012 to Jan. 2013; Operations Officer, 4th Marine Logistics Group; Assistant Chief of Staff for Logistics, Marine Forces Korea; Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans, Marine Forces South; Vice Chief of Staff, Marine Forces Reserve.

Colonel Katz’s joint assignments include J-4 Accountability Officer, Multinational Security Transition Command Iraq, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Baghdad 2008; Department Head, Guantanamo Bay Operations, Periodic Review Secretariat, Office of Secretary of Defense, Special Operations Low Intensity Conflict. 

Colonel Katz’s military education includes Amphibious Warfare School; Special Education Program at the Naval Postgraduate School; Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and resident Top Level School at the Marine Corps War College.

Colonel Katz has a Bachelor of Science in Power Plant and Facilities Engineering from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy; Master of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School; and Master of Strategic Studies from the Marine Corps War College.

Colonel Katz assumed his current assignment as Chief of Staff Marine Forces Reserve in August 2024.
