Commanding Officer, 4th Dental Battalion Captain Frederick Canby, DC

Captain Frederick Canby graduated from Colby College, Waterville, Maine, with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1984. Additionally he completed studies one year abroad at The Phillips Universitaet, Marburg, West Germany in 1982.  In 1988 he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Georgetown University, Washington DC, and in 1996 his Masters of Science degree and certificate in Endodontics from Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois.

In 1985 Captain Canby was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy Reserve through the 1925I program. In 1988, as a Lieutenant he entered active duty and was assigned to Naval Dental Clinic Long Beach, Long Beach, California and placed TAD to USS WABASH (AOR 5). In 1990 he transferred to USS MISSOURI (BB 63) and deployed to Operations Desert Shield/Storm. During this tour he was both assistant Dental Officer and Department Head. In 1992 he earned his Surface Warfare Medical Department Pin. Upon decommissioning USS MISSOURI he returned to Naval Dental Center Long Beach.

In 1994, Captain Canby was released from Active Duty and placed in the IRR and VTU. In 1996 upon his return to Maryland, he re-affiliated with the active reserve and was assigned to NR NDCL 106, Bethesda, Maryland. In 1998 he transferred to 24th Dental Company, 4th Dental Battalion, where he was Officer In Charge of DET 2/Washington DC from 2002 to 2007.  In late 2006 he became the Training Officer for 4th Dental Battalion, Marietta, Georgia, and in June 2008, Operations Officer.

In June 2010, Captain Canby became the Acting Commanding Officer of the new NR Medical Humanitarian Operations Unit under the Deputy NAVMED National Capitol Area. The unit was renamed NR-NMSC, Jacksonville, Florida.  He returned to 4th Dental Battalion for one year before assuming the position of Executive Officer of OHSU Portsmouth, Portsmouth, Virginia from December 2012 to December 2014. In January 2015 he affiliated with EMF Bethesda, DET P at NOSC Washington/Joint Base Andrews. He assumes command of 4th Dental Battalion in December 2015.

Captain Canby’s decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal (3), Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (3), Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Battle E Ribbon (2), Public Health Service Commendation (3), Arctic Service Ribbon and others.
