Sergeant Major, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment Sergeant Major John W. Sumner

Sergeant Major Sumner enlisted in the Marine Corps delayed entry program on December 21, 1988.  On September 11, 1989 he reported to recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Upon Completion of Recruit Training, MCT and Motor Vehicle Operators Course in 1990, he was assigned to 7th Communication Battalion, 3rd SRIG, Okinawa Japan as a Vehicle Operator.

During that tour of duty, Lance Corporal Sumner was involuntary extended for an additional six months to support the Persian Gulf War.  He participated in multiple exercises in the Northern Training Area as well as Team Spirit 1991 in South Korea.

In November 1991, Lance Corporal Sumner received orders to Head-quarters Service Battalion, MCCDC, Quantico Virginia.  As a vehicle operator, his rolls included ammunitions carrier, 44 passenger bus operator and personal driver for commanding officers.

In June 1993, Corporal Sumner was honorably discharged after completing four years of active duty to pursue a college education. 

On March 3 1999, upon completion of four years of college, Corporal Sumner enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves, Headquarters Company, 25th Marine Regiment, Devens Massachusetts.  He was placed into the Motor transport section as a vehicle operator.

In January 2002, Headquarters Company was mobilized in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  The next twelve months were spent at Camp LeJeune, NC. 2nd Marine Division.  Sergeant Sumner was the Motor Transport Operations Chief.  He also filled the Platoon Sergeant position for Service Platoon.

On April 2, 2003, Sergeant Sumner was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant.  He became the Company Gunnery Sergeant in September 2004.

Staff Sergeant Sumner was activated on July 5, 2005 to support Operation Iraqi Freedom.  From August 2005 to February 2006, he served as a Company Advisor to the Iraqi Army in the area of Saqliwiyah and Fallujah.  Upon returning to Headquarters Company, he went back to the Company Gunnery Sergeant position.

Promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in October 2006, he filled the Company Gunnery Sergeant position until July 2008.  At that point, Gunnery Sergeant Sumner became the acting first sergeant for the Company.  He served that billet until May 16, 2010.

In June 2010, First Sergeant Sumner reported to General Support Motor Transportation Company, Providence, RI, 6th Motor Transportation Battalion, 4th Marine Logistics Group, as the Company First Sergeant.

From September 2011 to April 2012, First Sergeant Sumner was activated to support Operation Enduring Freedom.  Served with 2nd Supply Battalion, II MEF, as the Company First Sergeant for a General Support Motor Transport Company on Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan.

After the deployment, First Sergeant Sumner returned to his position within company.

In May 2014, First Sergeant Sumner reported to Bravo Company, 1 Battalion, 25th Marines and served as the Company First Sergeant until May 2015.

June 2015, Sergeant Major Sumner reported to 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines in Bridgton, MO as the Battalion Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Sumner has a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography from Salem state College, Salem Massachusetts and his personal decorations include the Bronze Star Metal, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal w/gold star and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
