Biography

 

Lieutenant Colonel James D. Oliveto
Commanding Officer
3d Battalion, 23d Marine Regiment

Lieutenant Colonel Oliveto graduated from Siena College in 2005 and was commissioned through the Officer Candidate Selection process in 2006.  After qualifying as an Infantry Officer, LtCol Oliveto was assigned to 1st Battalion, 4th Marines from 2006 until 2009. There he deployed twice to Iraq, once as a Mobile Assault Platoon Commander to Al Qa’im and again as a Company Executive Officer to Fallujah, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In 2009, LtCol Oliveto reported to The Basic School in Quantico, VA to serve as an Urban Warfare Instructor and a Staff Platoon Commander.  Upon completion of his tenure as a Platoon Commander, LtCol Oliveto was selected to serve as an Instructor at the Infantry Officers Course. In 2013, LtCol Oliveto graduated from Expeditionary Warfare School in Quantico, VA as a Distinguished Graduate. Prior to re-entering the fleet, LtCol Oliveto served as a Platoon Commander at Officer Candidate School from May 2013 to August 2013.

In August 2013, LtCol Oliveto was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines as Commanding Officer of India Company.  In December 2013, India Company deployed to Libya in support of the Benghazi attacks on the United States Embassy.  In July 2014, LtCol Oliveto was the Ground Force Commander for Operation Oaken Lotus, evacuating 156 Americans from the U.S. Embassy after a civil war erupted in Tripoli, Libya.  Upon returning to the United States and 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines, LtCol Oliveto assumed command of Head Quarters and Service Company. In December of 2014, LtCol Oliveto was assigned to Division Schools to serve as the Deputy Director.  He held this position until he began the transition off of Active Duty into the Reserves in June of 2015.

Upon returning to his native New York, LtCol Oliveto joined the New York State Police where he currently holds the rank of Investigator and is assigned to the New York State Intelligence Center. While serving as a New York State Trooper in Saratoga County, LtCol Oliveto held command of Echo Company, 4th Light Armor Reconnaissance from January 2017 through September 2019. Throughout this period, LtCol Oliveto spent two extended annual training periods in 29 Palms, California, supporting a battalion reinforced exercise and Integrated Training Exercise (ITX) 4-19. LtCol Oliveto deployed to the Virgin Islands with the New York State Police to assist local authorities with security support post-Hurricane Irma. 

LtCol Oliveto graduated from Command and Staff College in 2020 and began as the 25th Marines Regimental Assistant Operations Officer shortly thereafter. He served there from June 2020 through December 2021 as the regiment executed ITX 4-21. Most recently, LtCol Oliveto served as the Executive Officer of 1st Battalion 25th Marines from November 2021 through October 2022 before being selected to command 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines.    

LtCol Oliveto's personal decorations include the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal 4th Award, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and Navy Unit Commendation Medal 2nd award.
