Sergeant Major Joseph S. Gregory enlisted in the Marine Corps on August 08, 1990 and reported to Alpha Company, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California on March 18, 1991 for recruit training. Upon completion of recruit training, he reported to Marine Combat Training in Camp Pendleton.
In July 1991, Private Gregory attended Naval Aviation Technical Training Command in Millington, Tennessee for Aviation Hydraulics Mechanic training. Upon graduation in September 1991, Private First Class Gregory reported to MCAS Tustin for CH-53E Hydraulics training. After completing training in December 1991, he reported to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361 (HMH-361) as a hydraulics technician.
In April 1992, he detached from HMH-361 to deploy on WEST PAC with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 164 (HMM-164) Reinforced (REIN), aboard the USS TRIPOLI in support of Operation RESTORE HOPE, Mogadishu, Somalia. Upon his return in April 1993, Lance Corporal Gregory was reattached with HMH-361 and worked as the night crew supervisor where he was promoted meritoriously to the rank of corporal. In October 1993, he deployed with HMM-161 (REIN) aboard the USS ESSEX. Returning in October 1994, he was again attached to HMH-361 where he served as the Assistant Supervisor of the Airframes shop and was promoted to the rank of sergeant. In March 1995, Sergeant Gregory deployed again aboard the USS ESSEX with HMM-166 (REIN) as the CH-53E Airframes Detachment Supervisor. Upon return in March 1996, he was reattached to HMH-361 as a Quality Assurance Representative.
In January 1998, Sergeant Gregory received orders to report to Drill Instructor School, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. During this tour he served as Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Series Chief Drill Instructor for 3rd Battalion, Kilo Company and was promoted to staff sergeant in April 1999.
In September 2001 SSgt Gregory reported to HMH-361, where he held the billets of Staff Non Commissioned Officer in Charge (SNCOIC) of the airframes division and Airframes Division Chief. In January 2003, he received orders to HMH-465 to deploy aboard the USS BOXER in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF). Upon reaching the Arabian Gulf he was deployed to Jaliba, Iraq and served as a Quality Assurance Representative and as an Aerial Observer. Retuning in July 2003, SSgt Gregory again deployed with HMH-465 as part of the unit deployment program (UDP) to Okinawa, Japan. From Okinawa, the squadron deployed to Al Asad, Iraq, in support of OIF II. He returned from Iraq in July 2004 and was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in August and assigned as the Airframes Division Chief. In March 2005 GySgt Gregory again deployed with HMH-465 to Al Asad in support of OIF III, and served as the Airframes Division Chief. Upon returning in October 2005, GySgt Gregory was assigned as the Quality Assurance SNCOIC. In September 2006 GySgt Gregory was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11 as the Headquarters Squadron First Sergeant. In July 2007 GySgt Gregory was assigned as the Quality Assurance Division Chief of HMH-465. During this assignment GySgt Gregory deployed to Mongolia as a mentor to the non commissioned officers and staff non commissioned officers of the 330th Mongolian Army, from February 2008 to May 2008. First Sergeant Gregory was promoted to his current rank in August 2008. He reported to 1st Battalion, 10th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, NC in August 2008 and served as the First Sergeant for Battery C. 1stSgt Gregory assumed the duties of Battery First Sergeant for Headquarters Battery in February 2010. In October 2010 he deployed with the battery to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
In September 2011, First Sergeant Gregory received orders and reported to 3d Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, CA where he served as the Company First Sergeant for Company F and Headquarters and Service Company. In April 2013 he was promoted to his current rank and received orders to Combat Logistics Battalion 5, as the Battalion Sergeant Major. During this tour he also served as the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force-Crisis Response-Central Command, Logistics Combat Element, Sergeant Major.
In June 2015, Sergeant Major Gregory received orders and reported to 1st Battalion, 24th Marines to serve as the Battalion Sergeant Major, his current billet.
Sergeant Major Gregory’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, Air Medal with 9th strike flight, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars.
