Sergeant Major, 23rd Marine Regiment Sergeant Major Robert L. Nutt

Robert L. Nutt enlisted in the Marine Corps in Oct 1988 and graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC in Oct 1989.  In November 1989, Private Nutt was ordered to Marine Combat Training (MCT), aboard Camp Geiger, NC. Upon completion of MCT, Private First Class Nutt was ordered to Landing Support Specialist School at Court House Bay, Camp Lejeune, NC.

Upon completion, he received orders to 4th & 5th Long Shoreman Platoons, Wilmington, NC. In December of 1990, within seven months of joining his unit in Wilmington, Lance Corporal Nutt deployed with the 2d Marine Division in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

 After returning from deployment, Lance Corporal Nutt transferred units, and in September of 1990 he reported to 2nd Platoon, 6th Motor Transport, BN, Texarkana, Texas. During his time with 2nd Platoon, he received on-the-job-training in a new MOS and became a Motor-T LVS Operator (3533). While serving with 2nd Platoon, he was Meritoriously Promoted to the rank of Corporal. As a Corporal he held the billet of 2nd Platoon, Platoon Sergeant.

In January of 1995, Corporal Nutt was assigned to duty with Recruiting Station, New Orleans, LA. He spent six months supporting the recruiting efforts of Recruiting Sub-Station, Monroe, LA.

In December of 1996, Sergeant Nutt reported to Recruiter School, MCRD, San Diego, CA.  After completing Recruiter School, he was assigned to Recruiting Station, Little Rock, AR, Recruiting Sub-Station, Fayetteville, AR. While there he was promoted to Staff Sergeant, twice awarded RS Little Rock Recruiter of the Year, and completed a successful tour as a Recruiter and MEPS Liaison.

In January of 2001, upon completion of a successful tour on Recruiting Duty, Staff Sergeant Nutt joined the Inactive Ready Reserve to pursue a civilian career in marketing and advertising.
After the attacks of September 11th, 2001, Staff Sergeant Nutt could not resist the desire to return to the Corps. In December 2003 he joined Headquarters & Service Company, 3d Battalion, 24th Marines, in St Louis, MO as the Motor-T Chief, just in time to mobilize and deploy to Iraq in January of 2004 as part of Iraqi Freedom 2.0.

Staff Sergeant Nutt remained with H&S Company, 3/24 after the deployment and continued as the S-4 Chief. While serving as the S-4 Chief he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant, and in May of 2006 became the 3/24, H&S Company Gunnery Sergeant.

Gunnery Sergeant Nutt mobilized with H&S Company June 1st of 2009 in support of Iraqi Freedom 9.2, and was frocked to the rank of First Sergeant on June 5th 2009. He was assigned the billet of 3/24, H&S Company First Sergeant and deployed to Iraq. First Sergeant Nutt was promoted to First Sergeant in January of 2010 while serving in Iraq as part of OIF 9.2.

First Sergeant Nutt completed a successful three year tour as the First Sergeant for H&S Company, 3/24, before spending a year with 4th Recon BN, as the H&S Company 1stSgt. While serving with 4th Recon BN, he was selected to his current rank of Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Nutt received orders in June of 2013 to 4th Force Reconnaissance Company, 4th Marine Division, Alameda, CA, where he served as the Sergeant Major for three successful and very rewarding years.

As of July 2016, Sergeant Major Nutt began his current tour as the Sergeant Major for the 23d Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, San Bruno, CA.

Sergeant Major Nutt’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2nd Award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5th Award), Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and Select Marine Corps Reserve Medal (5th Award).
