Sergeant Major Joseph L. Boley
Inspector-Instructor Command Senior Enlisted Leader
6th Communication Battalion

Sergeant Major Boley, a native of Oklahoma and Arkansas, joined the Marine Corps in April 2007 when he attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. After graduating from recruit training, Private Boley reported to Infantry Training Battalion in Camp Pendleton, California (CA) earning MOS 0331 Infantry Machine Gunner and was promoted to Private First Class. Subsequently, he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines in 29 Palms, CA.

In April 2008, while deployed to Afghanistan he received a combat meritorious promotion to Lance Corporal. Upon return, he was deployed again with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2009, where he became a 0916 Martial Arts Instructor and was the honor graduate for the Combat Water Safety Simmer Course. Additionally, he was the honor graduate at the Division Schools Intermediate Machinegun Course and later attended the Infantry Machine Gun Leaders Course. Upon returning to the unit, he was meritoriously promoted to Corporal.

In January 2011, Corporal Boley reported to Marine Security Guard (MSG) School in Quantico, Virginia. After graduating MSG School, he was assigned to the American Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, Geneva Switzerland, and San Jose, Costa Rica where he served as the Assistant Detachment Commander. While on MSG duty, Corporal Boley was promoted to Sergeant on July 1st, 2011, and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant on July 2nd, 2012. Additionally, he served as personal security for the President of the United States, Vice President of the United States, and the Secretary of the State and he was hand selected to be in the Joint Service Color Guard for the End of War Ceremony for Iraq.

In May 2014, Staff Sergeant Boley received orders to report to 3d Battalion, 3d Marines in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He served as the Platoon Sergeant for the Weapons Company Combined Anti-Armor Platoon and 3rd Platoon with Lima Company. As Platoon Sergeant he deployed twice to Okinawa, Japan as the Forward Deployed Force (FDF). While on the FDF he trained in South Korea and Japan. On deployment, Staff Sergeant Boley attended Career School and was the honor graduate and upon returning from deployment, he attended Marine Corps Instructor of Water Survival Course and earned MOS 0918.

In April 2017, Staff Sergeant Boley attended Marine Combat Instructor School at the School of Infantry West (SOI-W) where he was the honor graduate and earned the MOS 0913 and 0933. Subsequently, he received orders to report to SOI-W, Marine Combat Training Battalion (MCT). Staff Sergeant Boley was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant on August 2017 and began his time as a Combat Instructor. Gunnery Sergeant Boley was assigned to MCT, Fox Company and served as Combat Instructor, Platoon Sergeant, Company Chief Instructor, and Company Gunnery Sergeant. During his time at MCT, Gunnery Sergeant Boley attended the Force Fitness Instructor Course, where he earned the MOS 0919 and attended the Advanced Course Seminar, where he was a distinguished graduate.

In July 2020, Gunnery Sergeant Boley received orders to report to 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, Headquarters and Service Company and served as the Company Operations Chief. Gunnery Sergeant Boley was frocked to First Sergeant on March 12, 2021 and received orders to report to 1st Radio Battalion, Company A and served as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader. While assigned to 1st Radio Battalion, he attended First Sergeant's Course and the E-8 Regional Seminar.

In November 2023, First Sergeant Boley received orders to Marine Wing Support Squadron 371, where he served as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader for Motor Transport Company and Airfield Operations Company. During this assignment, he went to the Philippines in support of Summer Exercise Campaign 2024.

First Sergeant Boley was frocked to Sergeant Major on July 8, 2025 and executed orders to report to 6th Communication Battalion in Brooklyn, NY and assumed his current billet as the Inspector Instructor Command Senior Enlisted Leader.

Sergeant Major Boley's personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three gold stars in lieu of fourth award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star in lieu of second award, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
