Sergeant Major Zachary L. Richardson
Sergeant Major, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 774

Sergeant Major Richardson is a native of Athens, Georgia on June 9, 1980.  After graduating high school in 1998, he enrolled in, and attended classes at, Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia.  In May of 1999, he reported to Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Paris Island, SC.  Upon graduation, he reported to Battery B, 4th Low Altitude Air Defense (LAAD) Bn in Smyrna, Ga.  In May of 2000, he graduated with honors from Young Harris College with an Associate’s Degree in Science.  During the summer of 2000, Lance Corporal Richardson attended the Field Radio Operators Course in 29 Palms, Ca where he obtained the MOS of 0621, Field Radio Operator.

While assigned to 4th LAAD, he filled the positions of Radio Operator, Radio Supervisor, and Section Leader.  In June of 2001, Lance Corporal Richardson attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Lejeune, NC.  After returning from this training, he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal and attended the resident Corporal’s Course, where he was the honor graduate.  He attended the University of Georgia and graduated with honors in May of 2004 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science with an emphasis in Biology.

In 2004, Corporal Richardson was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and deployed with 4th LAAD as a Provisional Security Detachment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom.  He served as a Squad Leader during this deployment from June 2004 to May 2005.  After the completion of the deployment, Sergeant Richardson was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

In April 2007, SSgt Richardson joined Company B, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion as the Company Radio Chief.  In July 2007, he attended the resident Radio Chief’s Course in 29 Palms, Ca.  In October 2007, SSgt Richardson attended the Combat Marksmanship Trainer (CMT) Course.  SSgt Richardson accepted orders for a limited tour Active Reserve assignment as the active duty Radio Chief for the I&I staff of Company B, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion in May 2008.  While serving in this billet, he attended the Basic Airborne Course, Antiterrorism Officer’s (ATO) Course and the Substance Abuse Control Officer (SACO) Course. 

In February of 2010, SSgt Richardson was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.  In May of 2010 he returned to the Selected Marine Corps Reserve assigned to Company B, 4th Recon Bn as the Communications Chief and attended the resident Watch Officer/Watch Chief course in 29 Palms, Ca.  He was later selected to fill the billet of Company First Sergeant (acting) in August of 2010.  During this time, he attended the resident Advanced Staff Non Commissioned Officer’s Course in Quantico, VA in May 2011. 

In November of 2011, GySgt Richardson deployed in support of the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force (SPMAGTF) Black Sea Rotational Force (BSRF-12) as the Ground Combat Element (GCE) First Sergeant.  After returning in September of 2012, GySgt Richardson resumed his role as the Communications Chief for Co. B, 4th Recon Bn.    

Gunnery Sergeant Richardson was selected for promotion to First Sergeant in March of 2014 and was assigned to Company E, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion in Joliet, IL. During his tour he completed the First Sergeant Course, Regional E8 Seminar, and Double Bag Static Line Parachutist Course.  Additionally, he coordinated and conducted multiple Lance Corporal Leadership Seminar’s for all junior Marines in the command.  Following a one year extension of his tour in Joliet, 1stSgt Richardson was assigned to Personnel Retrieval and Processing (PRP) Company, CLR-45, 4th MLG where he served as the Company First Sergeant.  During this time, he also served as the First Sergeant for the PRP Detachment located in Quantico, VA.

First Sergeant Richardson was selected for promotion to Sergeant Major and assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 774 in Norfolk, VA in May 2019 and is currently serving as the Squadron Sergeant Major. He is currently mobilized in support of SPMAGTF-CR AFRICOM 20.1. 

In the civilian sector, SgtMaj Richardson has works for Amazon Fulfillment and is currently a Senior Operations Manager for the Fulfillment Center located in West Columbia, SC. 

SgtMaj Richardson’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal (6th award).
