Jeffrey A. Sommers was born in Robbinsdale, MN and raised in Ramsey, MN.  He enlisted in December 1991 and underwent recruit training at 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA.

 In July 1992, Private First Class Sommers completed Mortarman training at the School of Infantry, Camp Pendleton, CA, where he finished first in his class.  In August 1992, Private First Class Sommers completed Security Forces Training at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA.  He served as a security guard on the USS Carl Vinson CVN-70 and the USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72. 

 In August 1994 Corporal Sommers received orders to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC, where he served in a variety of billets from Mortarman to Fire Team Leader.

Corporal Sommers was honorably discharged from active duty in December 1995.  He remained in the Individual Ready Reserve until June 1997 whereas he joined Military Police Company, Headquarters Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Twin Cities, MN, where he served as a Motor Transport Operator.  Corporal Sommers was meritoriously promoted to Sergeant in May 1999.  In September 1999 Sergeant Sommers completed the Motor Transport Operators Course in Fort Leonard Wood, MO, where he finished first in his class. 

In January 2003, Sergeant Sommers was deployed to Iraq for the initial ground invasion in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and served as the Motor Transportation Chief.

In June 2005, Staff Sergeant Sommers volunteered for duty to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 5-7 and served as Squad Leader.

In December 2008, Gunnery Sergeant Sommers was once again deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 9-1 and 9-2 where he served as Platoon Commander and Motor Transport Operation Chief. 

Gunnery Sergeant Sommers volunteered for duty in May 2011 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  He served as a Team Leader and Police Advisor at the Regional Training Center Kandahar.

In May 2012, Gunnery Sergeant Sommers was promoted to First Sergeant and was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 23rd Marines located in Houston, TX. 

In May 2015, First Sergeant Sommers was transferred to Support Company, 4th Law Enforcement Battalion, Force Headquarters Group located in St. Paul, MN

In May 2017, First Sergeant Sommers was promoted to Sergeant Major and assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 471 located in Minneapolis, MN.

His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon.
