Sergeant Major Speal enlisted in the Marines Corps in September 2001, from Chattanooga, TN. He reported for recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina on July 7, 2002.
Upon completion of recruit training, Sergeant Major Speal was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Private First Class and reported to Marine Combat Training Battalion. Following MCT, Private First Class Speal reported to Marine Corps Communications Electronics School in Twenty-nine Palms, CA to attend the Field Radio Operators Course.
Private First Class Speal received orders to transfer to his reserve unit in Chattanooga, TN and reported to M Battery, 4th Battalion, 14th Marines, 4th Marine Division. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in April 2003 and served as a Radio Operator in the Fire Direction Center.
In July 2004, Lance Corporal Speal was activated to serve as a field radio operator with Battery M, 4th Battalion, 14th Marines, 1st Marine Division in Operation Iraqi Freedom 2.2. While serving his tour, Lance Corporal Speal was Combat Meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal on February 2, 2005.
Upon completion of the deployment, Corporal Speal returned to Chattanooga in March 2005 and demobilized in July 2005. Corporal Speal was assigned to Battery M, 3d Battalion, 14th Marines where he served as the Radio Supervisor for the Fire Direction Center.
Corporal Speal was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on April 1, 2006. Upon promotion he was assigned the collateral duties as the Battery Color Sergeant, Substance Abuse Control Officer, and Embarkation Chief in addition to his regular duties of Radio Supervisor.
In December 2007, Sergeant Speal was again activated to serve with Battery M, 3d Battalion, 14th Marines in Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he served as the Assistant Radio Chief. Sergeant Speal returned home in Nov 2008 and assumed the duties as the Radio Chief with Battery M.
In Nov 2009 Sergeant Speal was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and assumed the duties as the Headquarters Platoon Sergeant for Battery M. In April 2013 Staff Sergeant Speal was accepted to the Extended Active Duty (EAD) Program to serve as a Canvassing Recruiter with Recruiting Station Nashville. He reported to Basic Recruiter School Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in July 2013. Following graduation Staff Sergeant Speal reported on September 3, 2013 to RSS Memphis. In March 2014 Staff Sergeant Speal was selected to become the next Station Commander of RSS Memphis. Staff Sergeant Speal was selected to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant on March 15, 2015. Gunnery Sergeant Speal finished his tour as the Station Commander of RSS Memphis on June 10, 2015.
On June 29, 2015 Gunnery Sergeant Speal was assigned to Headquarters Detachment, Marine Wing Communications Squadron 48 located aboard Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois as the S-3 Training Chief. On December 29, 2015 Gunnery Sergeant Speal completed an Inter-unit Transfer to Detachment A (Rear), Marine Wing Communications Squadron 48 and served as the Detachment First Sergeant and Detachment Communications Chief. Gunnery Sergeant Speal was selected for promotion to First Sergeant in March 2019.
On August 12, 2019 First Sergeant Speal assumed the duties as the Company First Sergeant with Bridge Company C, 6th Engineer Support Battalion located aboard Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington, Tennessee. In accordance with MCBUL 5400 dated April 28, 2020 Bridge Company C was deactivated on November 8, 2020 and First Sergeant Speal executed an Inter-Unit Transfer to Headquarters Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 4 on December 2, 2020 to assume the duties as the Company First Sergeant.
Sergeant Major Speal was selected to the rank of Sergeant Major in March of 2023. Upon selection he received orders to assume the duties as the Battalion Sergeant Major for 6th Communications Battalion, located in Brooklyn, NY. Sergeant Major Speal checked in on March 13, 2024 and executed the official Appointment and Relief with Sergeant Major Courtney on May 18, 2024 to assume the duties as the Battalion Sergeant Major.
Sergeant Major Speal holds an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Engineering Technology with honors (Cum Laude, Chattanooga State Community College, 2012) and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management Information Systems from Florida Atlantic University. Sergeant Major Speal's personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3x Gold Stars in lieu of fourth award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Gold Star in lieu of second award), Combat Action Ribbon, and numerous unit and service awards.
