SgtMaj Curtis enlisted in the Marine Corps on 26 October 2001. He reported to Parris Island, South Carolina for recruit training on 08 April 2002. After graduating recruit training, he was assigned to Infantry Training Battalion at Camp Geiger, North Carolina for basic infantry training as a 0311 (Infantry Rifleman).

After completing ITB, in September of 2002, SgtMaj Curtis was assigned to Company K, 3d Battalion 6th Marines (Anti-Terrorism Battalion). SgtMaj Curtis was deployed to CJTF-HOA aboard the USS Mount Whitney, Korengal, Afghanistan (OEF) and Al Qaim, Habbannyia, Iraq participating in Operations IRON FIST and STEEL CURTAIN in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.

In July 2006, SgtMaj Curtis reported to the School of Infantry-East and assigned as a Combat Instructor and Platoon Commander in Company C, Infantry Training Battalion. SgtMaj Curtis was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant in January of 2008 and was reassigned to Advanced Infantry Training Battalion. In January of 2008, he was assigned to Infantry Squad Leaders Course as a squad instructor. After completing a successful tour as a Marine Combat Instructor, SgtMaj Curtis was assigned to Company K and Weapons Company, 3d Battalion 3rd Marines as a rifle Platoon Sergeant, Combined Anti-armor Team Platoon Section Leader, and Platoon Sergeant in July 2009. During this tour, he deployed to Nawa, Afghanistan and Garmsir, Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

In September of 2012, SgtMaj Curtis reported to Chesapeake, Virginia for Security Supervisors Course. Upon completion of the Security Supervisors Course, he received the MOS 8152, Marine Corps Security Force guard, and was assigned to Bravo (Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team) Company as a Platoon Sergeant. During this time, he deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After returning from deployment, he was meritoriously promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in July 2013 and assumed the Company Gunnery Sergeant position September 2015.

SgtMaj Curtis was reassigned to 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines in October of 2015 as the Company Gunnery Sergeant for Company K. During this time, he deployed to Okinawa Japan for a unit deployment program, completing a (LF-CARAT) to Cambodia, Brunei and Korea. While deployed he was selected to First Sergeant and frocked in April 2017 and transferred to Weapons Company 3/2, as Company First Sergeant.

In August of 2018, he was transferred to Kilo Company 3/2 until May 2019. During this time, he deployed a second time to Okinawa Japan for a unit deployment program. In May 2019, SgtMaj Curtis was transferred to Charlie Company, 4th Law Enforcement Battalion in Dayton Ohio to serve as the Inspector & Instructor 1st Sergeant. In December 2021, SgtMaj Curtis was assigned as the Sergeant Major of Recruiting Station Montgomery, Alabama.  In April 2023, SgtMaj Curtis was assigned as the MAG-49 Det C, Site Support New Orleans Sergeant Major, where he currently serves.

SgtMaj Curtis’s personal awards include the Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal (gold star in lieu of second award), Navy/Marine Corps Commendation (2 gold stars in lieu of third award), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with (3 gold stars in lieu of fourth award with combat distinguishing device), Combat Action Ribbon (gold star in lieu of second award), Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and the Marine Combat Instructor Ribbon.
