Lieutenant Colonel Chad J. Magro
Commanding Officer
Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron (VMGR) 234

Lieutenant Colonel Magro is a native of Memphis, Tennessee and graduated from Louisiana State University in 2001 where he earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology. He later was commission as a Second Lieutenant from the United States Marine Corps’ Officer Candidate Course in 2004. He was designated a Naval Aviator in 2007 and subsequently reported to the KC-130J Aviation Training Unit at MCAS Cherry Point, NC for initial training in the KC-130J.  In December 2007, he reported for duty as a KC-130J pilot with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 at MCAS Cherry Point, NC. 

While assigned to VMGR-252, LtCol Magro served in various billets in the Department of Safety and Standardization, Operations Department, and Maintenance Department.  He deployed with VMGR-252 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in August 2008.  He also deployed with VMGR-252, attached to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, to Djibouti in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  Following his tour at VMGR-252, LtCol Magro was assigned to 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in Okinawa, Japan in September 2010. 

LtCol Magro was reassigned to Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152 in January 2011.  In March 2011, he attended the Aviation Safety Officer (ASO) School in Pensacola, FL and assumed the duties as Marine Aircraft Group 36 ASO and later as VMGR-152’s ASO.  Later in his tour at VMGR-152, LtCol Magro was selected to attend the Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course (WTI) in Yuma, AZ.  He graduated as a Weapon and Tactics Instructor in April 2012 and assumed the duties as the squadron’s Aircrew Training Officer. 

In October 2013, LtCol Magro reported to Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 3 in MCAS Miramar to assume the duties as the KC-130J Flight Leadership Standardization and Evaluation (FLSE) Program Manager.  

During this tour, he was temporarily reassigned to Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352 in order to deploy to Moron, Spain as the KC-130J operations officer in support of Special Marine Air Ground Task Force – Crisis Response.

In June of 2015, LtCol Magro re-commissioned to the Selective Marine Corps Reserves affiliating with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 234 at Fort Worth JRB, TX.  He deployed with VMGR-234, attached to North and West Africa Response Force, to Djibouti supporting Operations Octave Quartz and Allies Refuge.

LtCol Magro’s personal awards include the Air Medal with strike/flight (3), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2).
