Major Jonathan M. Harris
Inspector-Instructor
4TH FORCE RECONNAISSANCE COMPANY

Major Harris was commissioned in the Marine Corps through the NROTC program at the University of Maine Orono in May 2010. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology. In April 2011, he reported to 3d Battalion, 8th Marines in Camp Lejeune, NC.

From April 2011 to December 2014 he was assigned to 3d Battalion, 8th Marines. While there he held billets as a Rifle Platoon Commander and Rifle Company Executive Officer in India Company. In May 2012, he deployed with First Platoon, India Company to Trek Nawa, Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. While deployed, he commanded an independent and partnered Patrol Base, Patrol Base Reilly, for three months before its demilitarization as part of the Battalion’s consolidation plan. Upon redeployment, he assumed duties as the Executive Officer, India Company. In January 2014, he deployed with the Company as part of Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Crisis Response Africa, SecFor Tripoli. During the deployment he participated in Operation OAKEN LOTUS and conducted the military assisted departure of U.S. personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli, Libya.

From May 2015 to July 2018, he was assigned to 2d Reconnaissance Battalion. While there, he held billets as Executive Officer, Alpha Company and Platoon Commander, Bravo Company. He completed the Unit Training Phase and Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) pre-deployment training plan before deploying on the 24th MEU with his platoon as part of the Maritime Raid Force (MRF). While on deployment, Captain Harris’s platoon served independently aboard the LPD-19 (USS Mesa Verde) as the MRF’s primary Visit, Board, Search and Seizure capability. Upon redeployment, Captain Harris received orders to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion.

From July 2018 to June 2020, he was assigned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion and served as the Company Commander for Alpha Company. He was promoted to his current rank in June 2020.

He is currently serving as the Inspector & Instructor, 4th Force Reconnaissance Company.

Major Harris is a graduate of the Infantry Officers Course, Basic Reconnaissance Course, Marine Combatant Dive School, Multi-Mission Parachute Course, Expeditionary Warfare School (Distinguished Graduate) and the U.S. Army Ranger School.

His personal decorations include: the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one Gold Star in lieu of Second award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon with Gold Star in lieu of Second award.
