Sergeant Major Kenneth W. Markie

Sergeant Major Ken Markie, a native of Wyoming, Minnesota, joined the Marine Corps in November 1996.  After graduating basic training at MCRD San Diego, he attended the School of Infantry and Anti-Tank Assault-man course at Camp Pendleton, CA. and Marine Corps Security Forces Battalion, Keflavik, Iceland
April of 1999 Cpl Markie was assigned to Weapons Company 3D Battalion, 5TH Marines in San Mateo, CA and was chosen as the anti-armor instructor and eventually a Javelin instructor at 1ST Marine Division, Division schools. Promoted to Sergeant in December of 2000, he attended the advanced Infantry squad leader's course at Camp Pendleton, CA before returning to Weapons Company 3/5 as a platoon sergeant and a platoon commander.
May 2005, Sgt Markie was assigned as an active duty reservist with Inspector Instructor Staff at Minneapolis, MN, as the Military Police Watch Commander. After his promotion to Staff Sergeant in June 2005, he attended the active duty career course in Quantico, VA. During his 5 years on the I&I staff he held numerous positions such as, Watch Commander, Security manager, physical security officer, and Anti-Terrorism Force Protection Officer. He also volunteered for deployment to Camp Lemonier, Djibouti, Africa, where he was a platoon commander, base security officer, and anti-terrorism force protection officer.  
2009 SSgt Markie was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and attended the active duty Advanced Career Course in Quantico, VA and in Feb 2010, he left the I&I staff to attend United States Marshals Service Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA. After Graduating as the Distinguished Honor Graduate, number one overall, he returned to MWSS 471 as the Headquarters and Service Company, Co 1stSgt. During this period, 1stSgt Markie graduated from The University of Management and Technology with his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice with an emphasis in Criminal Psychology and later a Master's degree in the same field. 
First Sergeant Markie was assigned to 4TH Law Enforcement Battalion, Company D, Billings, MT/Anchorage AK in May 2013 and attended annual training in Ukraine for Rapid Trident and Serbia for Platinum Wolf. He then attended the regional E-8 Seminar in Kaneohe, Bay Hawaii in 2016 before transferring back to the infantry with Fox Company 2D Battalion, 24TH Marines in Milwaukee Wisconsin, in June of 2016. 1stSgt Markie obtained his second Master's Degree from University of Management and Technology, this time in Homeland Security.
Sergeant Major Markie accepted assignment with 4TH Tank Battalion in San Diego, California at MCAS Miramar in April 2018 and served as the Battalion Sergeant major, through the Battalion deactivation ceremony in May 2021.
Sergeant Major Markie is currently serving as the Squadron Sergeant Major at Marine Wing Support Squadron 471, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. 
Sergeant Major Markie's personal awards include: The Army Achievement Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.  He is married with two children and lives in Sioux Falls, SD
