Major Joseph Chappell, a Michigan native, was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps in January 2008. He
completed officer candidate training at Quantico, Virginia, followed by The Basic School and Infantry Officer Course the
same year.
In January 2009, 2nd Lieutenant Chappell joined Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines in Jacksonville, North
Carolina, serving as Weapons Platoon Commander. He deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in December 2009 in
support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During this deployment, he functioned as a Joint Terminal Air Controller, Watch
Officer, Pay Agent, and Weapons Platoon Commander for Operation Moshtarak, the invasion of Marjah. He was
promoted to 1st Lieutenant during this deployment.
1st Lieutenant Chappell returned to Helmand Province for a second deployment with 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, serving
as executive officer for Weapons Company during Operation Tofan Sharq, a major clearing operation from Sangin to
Kajaki along Route 611. He was promoted to Captain in April 2012.
In June 2012, Captain Chappell reported to the School of Infantry East, Marine Combat Training, Camp Geiger, North
Carolina, serving as Hotel Company Commander. By April 2014, he became Director of Combat Instructor School until
January 2015, he then attended resident Professional Military Education at the US Army's Maneuver Captains Career
Course.
Captain Chappell then joined 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii in July 2015, serving as Headquarters and
Service Company Commander and Weapons Company Commander. He deployed twice to Okinawa, Japan as part of the
Unit Deployment Program, participating in Operations Ssang Yong, the Korean Military Exchange Program, Cobra Gold,
and training at Camp Fuji. He was promoted to Major in February 2018.
In June 2018, Major Chappell was selected to attend the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, as part of the
Commandant's Professional Intermediate Level Education Board, graduating with a master's degree in Management
Information Systems in September 2020. He received the Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper Information Technology
Management Award for outstanding academic performance, thesis quality, and leadership.
In October 2020, Major Chappell joined Systems Command, working as a project officer for Program Executive Office
Digital until June 2024. During his time at Systems Command he was in charge of Enterprise Infrastructure Modernization
where he maintained, modernized, and the adopted innovative technologies for utilization in the Marine Corps network.
He then reported to Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, in June 2024 where he currently serves as the
Inspector-Instructor.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold
stars in lieu of third award and with the combat distinguishing device, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal,
and the Combat Action Ribbon.
