First Sergeant Tyler D. Sheets

Private Sheets enlisted in the Marine Corps on June 13, 2007, and reported to MCRD San Diego on June 17, 2007. After recruit training, he received orders to Marine Combat Training, Hotel Company, Camp Pendleton, California. After graduating MCT West, Private First Class Sheets attended Combat Engineer School at Courthouse Bay, North Carolina.
 
After graduating Combat Engineer School, Lance Corporal Sheets was attached to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, Bravo Company, Camp Pendleton, California. In December 2008, LCpl Sheets deployed to Fallujah, Iraq. In January 2009, he was promoted to Corporal. Corporal Sheets received a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for actions while serving as 1st Fire Team Leader, 1st Squad. Upon returning to Camp Pendleton, CA, in May 2009, Corporal Sheets was chosen to be part of the VBSS Team for the 15th MEU. He was attached to Force Recon for his VBSS training. While on the 15th MEU, Corporal Sheets participated in the pirate takedown of the Magellan Star in the Gulf of Aden. He received a second Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal while serving as 1st Fire Team Leader, Trailer Platoon.
 
After returning from the 15th MEU, Corporal Sheets was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to 7th Engineer Support Battalion. He was attached to Alpha Company as 2nd Squad Leader for 1st Platoon. Sergeant Sheets then deployed to Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan. There, he cross-trained as a welder for the Battalion and was sent to Camp Geronimo, where he conducted over 60 welding missions. He was awarded a third Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
 
Sergeant Sheets returned from Afghanistan and received orders to become a Marine Combat Instructor. He attended Marine Combat Instructor School on July 10, 2012.
 
Following graduation, Sergeant Sheets received orders to MCT Golf Company as a Combat Instructor. On January 7, 2014, he transferred to H&I Company, Weapons Section, Combat Marksmanship Team. On October 11, 2014, he was transferred to MCT Hotel Company as a Combat Instructor. In July 2015, Sgt Sheets transferred again to H&I Company, Weapons Section, where he conducted multiple classes covering the POI and earned his Senior Instructor Certification. In October 2015, he was transferred to MCT Fox Company as a Platoon Commander. In January 2016, Sergeant Sheets was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant. He completed a total of 21 cycles in the training companies—15 of them as a Platoon Commander and 4 as a Platoon Sergeant. He also completed 36 rotations as a platform instructor with Headquarters and Instructor Group.
 
Staff Sergeant Sheets checked into MWSS-274 in April 2016, where he served as Combat Engineer Platoon Sergeant from April 2016 to August 2018.
 
He then checked into 2D CEB in August 2018 and was assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Platoon, as Platoon Guide. SSgt Sheets deployed with Charlie 1 on MRF-E 19.2 to Setermoen, Norway, where he served as Military-to-Military SNCOIC coordinator, while also maintaining duties as Platoon Guide.
 
Gunnery Sergeant Sheets checked into MWSS-371 in November 2019, where he was assigned to the Combat Engineer Platoon as acting Platoon OIC. In March 2020, he was tasked with being the Company First Sergeant of Engineer Company, MWSS-371. In January 2021, he was requested to serve as the Company First Sergeant of Bravo Company. On 25 May 2021, GySgt Sheets was FAP’ed to MAG-13 University, where he was assigned as the SNCOIC of Lance Corporal Seminar and Corporals Course.
 
GySgt Sheets later received orders to 7th Engineer Support Battalion and was assigned as the Platoon Sergeant for Alpha Company, Commander’s Task Force 75 (CTF-75). He deployed with Naval Construction Battalion 3 in support of CTF-75 Detachment, Philippines. He was later sent to Papua New Guinea to help rebuild relations with the Papua New Guinea Defense Force and construct a building for their reconnaissance platoon.
 
Gunnery Sergeant Sheets returned from deployment and was frocked to First Sergeant on February 1. He received orders to Assault Amphibian School, where he served as the H&S Company First Sergeant.
 
In May 2025, First Sergeant Sheets reported to Maintenance Company (-), CLB 453, Waco, Texas, where he is currently serving as the Inspector-Instructor First Sergeant.
 
First Sergeant Sheets’ personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with three gold stars in lieu of 4th award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with three gold stars in lieu of 4th award), Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and Humanitarian Service Medal.
