Biography

 

First Sergeant Phillip R. Bartell
Inspector - Instructor, Unit Senior Enlisted Leader
Fox Company, 2d Battalion, 23d Marine Regiment

First Sergeant Bartell is a native of Jackson, Michigan. He attended recruit training at MCRD, San Diego, California from January-April 2005. Private Bartell then went onto School of Infantry, West for Marine Combat Training (MCT). Upon graduating MCT, Pvt Bartell completed MOS training in the Tank System Technician Course in Fort Knox, Kentucky. During which, he was promoted to Private First Class and also earned meritorious Lance Corporal as the class honor graduate.

Following MOS School, Lance Corporal Bartell proceeded to 2nd Tank BN in Camp Lejuene, NC where he worked in Battalion Maintenance Platoon, H&S Company as a Recovery Section mechanic. In 2007, LCpl Bartell deployed to Fallujah, Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom with Bravo Company, 2nd Tank BN. LCpl Bartell was promoted to Corporal in 2007 while working as the Recovery Section Chief back in BN Maint Plt. In 2009, Corporal Bartell was promoted to Sergeant while serving as the Charlie Company Ramp Chief.

In 2009, Sergeant Bartell executed orders to Marine Corps Detachment, Fort Knox, Kentucky to serve as an Instructor for the Tank System Technician Course. In 2010, the Marine Corps Detachment transitioned to Fort Benning, Georgia. Sergeant Bartell made the move with the Detachment and begun working as the Curriculum Developer. Sergeant Bartell reenlisted with a lateral move as a Reconnaissance Marine.

In pursuit of earning the new MOS, Sergeant Bartell went to School of Infantry, East and completed the Infantry Rifleman course. Sgt Bartell then attended the Survival Evade Resistance Escape in Kittery, Maine. Shortly thereafter, Sgt Bartell attended Basic Reconnaissance Course as a part of class 5-13. Upon graduating BRC and earning the new MOS of 0321, Sgt Bartell received orders to 3D Recon BN in Okinawa, Japan.

In 2014, Sgt Bartell was assigned to 1st Plt, Alpha Company, 3D Recon BN, 3D MARDIV where he served as the Special Equipment NCO. Sgt Bartell served eight months in 3D Recon BN before reverting back to his original MOS as a Tank Mechanic. Sgt Bartell then received orders to 3D Maintenance BN, 3D MLG where he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. Staff Sergeant Bartell was only in 3D Maint BN for a couple months before he went TAD to the 31st MEU to act as the Armory SNCO for the MEU's Headquarters Element. In 2015, after serving on the MEU for eight months, SSgt Bartell reported to the G-3 of 3D MLG and served as the Tactical Air Chief for the MLG.

In 2017, SSgt Bartell attended the 5-17 Detachment Commander Course at MCESG. Upon Graduating, SSgt Bartell received orders to Detachment Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Region 1. SSgt Bartell served in Tashkent until August of 2018 when he received orders to become the Detachment Commander in Tallinn, Estonia. SSgt Bartell serving as the Detachment Commander in Tallinn, Estonia was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant on October 1st, 2018.  Gunnery Sergeant Bartell was assigned orders to Quantico, Virginia at MCESG headquarters in August of 2020 as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for the MSG School. 

In January of 2021, Gunnery Sergeant Bartell moved to serve at Headquarters Marine Corps in the Manpower Management Branch in the new JEPES section. In October of 2021, he moved sections in Manpower Management and served as an Enlisted Career Counselor.  During this time he was selected for First Sergeant.  He was frocked to First Sergeant in February of 2022 and assigned as the Senior Enlisted Advisor to Company M at The Basic School. 

In March of 2023, First Sergeant Bartell PCSed to Salt Lake City, Utah to become the Site Support Senior Enlisted Advisor at Camp Williams, Utah, where he is currently serving.
