Sergeant Major Alvarez graduated from Murrieta Valley High School, Murrieta, California in 1997. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on May 29, 1997 and attended recruit training at MCRD San Diego. Private Alvarez was promoted to Private First Class in April 1998 while attending MOS school. Upon completing MOS school, he received orders to Okinawa, Japan where he served with 3rd Supt Battalion, 3rd FSSG, III MEF. While stationed in Okinawa, he was promoted to Lance Corporal. In June 1999, LCpl Alvarez received orders to Camp Pendleton, CA for duty with 1st TSBn, 1st FSSG, I MEF. While based in Camp Pendleton, LCpl Alvarez participated in multiple training exercises at 29 Palms and supported WTI at MCAS Yuma, AZ. LCpl Alvarez was promoted to Corporal in October 1999. In April 2002, Cpl Alvarez was promoted to Sergeant, received an honorable discharge, and transferred to the Inactive Ready Reserve. In November 2002, Sgt Alvarez joined the Select Marine Corps Reserve and reported to 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, CA. In March 2003, Sgt Alvarez was mobilized and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedon where he served as a squad leader. Returning to Camp Pendleton in September 2003, Sgt Alvarez continued service with 4th LAR Bn. January through December 2006, Sgt Alvarez deployed to the Horn of Africa for service with 4th Provisional Security Company, Camp Lemonier, Djibouti where he served as a squad leader. Sgt Alvarez was promoted to Staff Sergeant May 2007, subsequently transferring to 3rd Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company in Long Beach, CA. In August 2009, SSgt Alvarez transferred back to 4th LAR Bn and mobilized in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In December 2010, SSgt Alvarez was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and transferred to 4th Medical Bn, 4th MLG at San Diego, CA, where he served as Company Gunnery Sergeant and Senior Enlisted Advisor. February through January 2013, GySgt Alvarez mobilized and deployed with Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force-AF 13.3, where he served as a team 6 chief. In May 2014, he was frocked to First Sergeant and transferred to 6th Comm Bn in Brooklyn, New York, where he served as General Support Company 1stSgt. In May 2017, 1stSgt Alvarez transferred to Counter Intelligence/Human Intelligence Company A, Intelligence Support Battalion, FHG. On July 1, 2020, 1stSgt Alvarez was promoted to Sergeant Major. SgtMaj Alvarez assumed duties as 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines Sergeant Major on August 14, 2020. SgtMaj Alvarez’s personal decorations include 2 Navy Commendation Medals, 2 Naval Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and OVSM. SgtMaj Alvarez holds a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice and a Masters degree in Business Management.
