Major Marcus J. Carlstrom is a native of Michigan. Following his studies at the Virginia Military Institute, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in May 2008. Upon graduation from The Basic School, he completed his initial training at the Infantry Officer Course in April 2009, and was then assigned to the 1st Marine Division for duty with 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines.  During this tour, he commanded a Rifle Platoon in Company K and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) to Garmsir District, Afghanistan.  Upon returning from OEF, he assumed duties as Executive Officer, Company K.

 

In June 2011, he was assigned to Recruiting Station (RS) Lansing where he served as the Officer Selection Officer. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in June 2012.  Major Carlstrom was named the Fiscal Year 2013 Officer Selection Officer of the Year for 9th Marine Corps District.

 

Following his tour of duty at RS Lansing in June 2014, Major Carlstrom transferred to the Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS) and graduated in May 2015. Reporting in May 2015 for duty with 2d Battalion, 3d Marine Regiment, 3d Marine Division, Major Carlstrom assumed the duties of Assistant Operations Officer and deployed in support of his battalion’s forward deployment to Okinawa, Japan. Upon completing the deployment in January 2016, he assumed the duties of Company Commander, Company F.  In preparation for his unit’s deployment, he led his company in the execution of Exercise Island Viper, Exercise Rim of the Pacific 16, and TALON Exercise 1-17.  From December 2016 to June 2017, he deployed with his company in support of his battalion’s forward deployment to Okinawa, Japan.  During this deployment, he and his company participated in Korea Marine Exchange Program 17-4, with the 1st and 2d Republic of Korea Marine Corps Reconnaissance Battalions.  In July 2017, he transferred to 2d Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, where he assumed his current duties as Inspector-Instructor for Company F, Milwaukee, WI.  He was promoted to the rank of Major on 1 Jun 2018.

 

Major Carlstrom is a 2008 graduate from the Virginia Military Institute’s NROTC Program, with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business.  He is also a 2017 graduate from American Military University, where he earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) with a Concentration in Entrepreneurship.  His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (third award), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with combat distinguishing device, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
