Eric F. Gross enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 1989 and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California from June to September 1990. Upon completion of recruit training, Private First Class Gross went on to complete Marine Combat Training and then School of Infantry where he graduated in December 1990 as a rifleman. While in training, he was promoted to Lance Corporal.
After completing his initial training, Lance Corporal Gross was assigned to the Casualty Replacement Company, 1st Marine Division, Twentynine Palms, California. He was subsequently re-assigned in January 1991 to 2d Battalion, 7th Marines as a rifleman and deployed in support of Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm from January to late March 1991 as part of Echo Company. While with Echo Company, Lance Corporal Gross held the billets of Rifleman, Assistant Automatic Gunner, Company Clerk and Company Training Non-Commissioned Officer. He was promoted to Corporal in February 1993. In late 1993, Corporal Gross moved to Headquarters and Service Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines to be the battalion Classified Materials Control Clerk.
In March 1995, Corporal Gross was promoted to Sergeant and was transferred to Golf Company, Marine Combat Training Battalion (East), School of Infantry (East), Camp Lejeune, North Carolina as a Troop Handler where he remained until his end of active service in June 1996.
Sergeant Gross was a member of the Individual Ready Reserve from June 1996 until July 1997 when he joined Company F, 2d Battalion, 24th Marines, Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a Rifle Squad Leader with 1st Platoon. Sergeant Gross remained with Company F until the end of his contract in February 1998.
Sergeant Gross re-affiliated with the Selected Marine Corps Reserve in October 2003, once again being assigned to Company F, 2d Battalion, 24th Marines as 1st Platoon Sergeant. Sergeant Gross was mobilized and deployed from June 2004 to May 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 2 where he held the billets of Rifle Platoon Sergeant for 1st Platoon and Company Police Sergeant.
Sergeant Gross transferred to Weapons Company, 2d Battalion, 24th Marines, Waukegan, Illinois in July 2005. Sergeant Gross was promoted to Staff Sergeant in July 2007. During his time with Weapons Company, Staff Sergeant Gross held the billets of Heavy Machinegun Section Leader, Mobile Assault Platoon Dismount Squad Leader, Mobile Assault Platoon Sergeant, Anti-Armor Platoon Sergeant and Headquarters Platoon Sergeant. He deployed to Iraq from September 2007 to November 2008 in Support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 8-01.
Staff Sergeant Gross transferred to Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines, Fort Devens, Massachusetts in October 2010 for duty as the 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander. He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in January 2011. From May 2011 to February 2012, Gunnery Sergeant Gross was mobilized and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 11-2 where he serves as 81mm Mortar Platoon Sergeant and Mobile Assault Platoon Sergeant.
In March 2012, Gunnery Sergeant Gross transferred to Company C, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, Lansing, Michigan for duty as Company Gunnery Sergeant. In March 2014, Gunnery Sergeant Gross was made Weapons Platoon Commander following table of organization changes made by Headquarters Marine Corps. Gunnery Sergeant Gross remained as Weapons Platoon Commander until April 2015 when he was promoted to First Sergeant. First Sergeant Gross was assigned to Weapons Company, 2d Battalion, 24th Marines, Fort Sheridan, Illinois in April 2015 where he currently serves as the Company First Sergeant.
First Sergeant Gross’ personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2d award) and Combat Action Ribbon (2d award).
