Colonel Garrett E. Means
Commanding Officer
Reserve Support Unit West/Deployment Processing Command

Col Garrett Means is a native of State College, Pennsylvania. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in American Studies in May of 1996 from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Col Means received his commission in May of 1996, attended The Basic School in August, and subsequently graduated from the Infantry Officer’s Course in 1997. His first assignment was to Second Battalion, Fifth Marines where he served as a Platoon Commander, Company Executive Officer, and Rifle Company Commanding Officer. In 1999 he was selected by the Commanding Officer, Fifth Marine Regiment to be frocked to the rank of Captain and assume duties as Regimental Headquarters Company Commander.

Col Means left active duty from 5th Marines in 2000 and joined 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion where he served as the Assistant Intelligence Officer. In the summer of 2001, he became an LAR platoon commander with Alpha Company, a position he held while simultaneously executing Active Duty Operational Support (ADOS) orders with The School of Infantry (West) in 2002. In February of 2003, Col Means mobilized with 4th LAR and participated in combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon return from Iraq, Col Means assessed into the Active Reserve Program and assumed duties as the Assistant Operations Officer for SOI (W). After being promoted to the rank of major, he then assumed the duties as the school’s Operations Officer.

In 2007, Col Means received orders to Marine Forces Reserve to assume the duties of Force Training Officer, a position he held for four years. In 2011 he was assigned to the Pentagon for duty as the Reserve Integration Officer/Global Force Manager for Plans, Policies, and Operations (PP&O) within the Current and Future Operations Branch (POC/F), where he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In 2014, following his tour at PP&O, Col Means attended the Marine Corps War College, graduating in 2015. He subsequently served as the Deputy Branch Head for Reserve Continuation and Transition Branch within Reserve Affairs Division until June of 2016 when he received orders to Camp Pendleton to become the Executive Officer of the Deployment Processing Command/Reserve Support Unit West (DPC/RSU W).

Col Means’ most recent assignment was as the Deputy AC/S G-3 and Senior Reserve Integrator within the AC/S G-3 of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF) where he served from March of 2017 until July 2021. He is married and has four children.
