Inspector-Instructor Sergeant Major, 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion Sergeant Major Derek D. Leggett

Sergeant Major Leggett entered the United States Marine Corps on 24 October 1989 at Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC. After graduating, he reported to Fort Sill Oklahoma, for his Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) School to become a Fire Direction Control-man (0844). 

After graduating MOS school, he reported to 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division in Camp Pendleton, CA.  During this period, he deployed to the Persian Gulf as Part of Task Force Ripper in support of Operations Desert Storm, Desert Shield, Desert Saber, Okinawa, Japan, Operation Restore Hope in Mogadishu, Somalia, and Operation Wild Fire in the state of Washington. 

Sergeant Leggett was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, with 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment and Kaneohe Bay Hawaii with 1st Battalion, 12th Marines.  During his time in Hawaii, he completed two UDP's back to Okinawa Japan.

Staff Sergeant Leggett volunteered for Drill Instructor duty and in December of 1998, he reported to Drill Instructor School, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA and was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion.  From April 1999 to April 2001, he trained seven Recruit Platoons, (five as a Junior and two as a Senior Drill Instructor).  During this time, he was selected to attend the Marine Combat Instructor of Water Survival Course and trained recruits on Water Survival Skills.

In April 2002, Gunnery Sergeant Leggett received orders to 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, for duty with Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines.  While assigned to 1/2 completed  two deployments to Iraq, in support of Operation Iraq Freedom,  as part of a Regimental Combat Team during the battle of An Nasariyah, and the second as part of the 24th MEU.

In August 2005, First Sergeant Leggett received orders to Inspector-Instructor Duty in Concord, CA. While on I&I duty as the First Sergeant, he worked numerous hours with community outreach programs, casualty assistance calls, funerals and Toys for Tots campaigns.

Assuming his current rank in November 2008, Sergeant Major Leggett received orders to HMM- 364, Camp Pendleton CA.   While assigned to HMM-364, he deployed to Al-Asad Iraq, and deployed with the 15th Marine Expedition Unit (MEU) as the Air Combat element (ACE) SgtMaj.

Sergeant Major Leggett reported to the Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group in Virginia Beach VA on 10 December 2013. While there he participated in five mission rehearsal exercises for the Republic of Georgia Deployment Program, in Hohenfels Germany Joint Multinational Readiness Center. He also had multiple trips to the Republic of Georgia, and around the globe in support of regional Marine Forces, and foreign country partners.

March 24 2015 Sergeant Major Leggett reported to Inspector –Instructor 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion Tampa FL, as the I-I SgtMaj.

His personal awards include the Bronze Star with Combat "V," Meritorious Service Medal with one Gold Star, Navy Commendation Medal with one Gold Star,  Navy Achievement Medal with two Gold Stars, and a Combat Action Ribbon with one Gold Star. He is authorized to wear the combat Air crewman Wings (two silver and one gold star).
